Those who travel by train between Trichy and Chennai in Rockfort Express will know the time it takes to change the Locomotive at Villupuram from Electric engine to Diesel Engine. It has been like this for quite a while.. Eventhough IR took electrification of tracks in many trunk routes, this Chennai – Trichy – Madurai route electrification plan was dormant for a long time. Now the time has come for Electric engines to run between Trichy and Chennai and soon between Madurai and Trichy as well.
On Jan 30th, the electric enabled railway line was thrown open to public. With the electrification of Villupuram-Tiruchi section, the travel time between Chennai and Tiruchi was bound to come down on account of better acceleration of electric locos and elimination of traction change at Villupuram.
Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed said electrification of Tiruchi – Madurai section had been sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 96.85 crore and wiring works completed up to Samayanallur with further works in progress.
“It has been planned to complete the entire works up to Madurai by December 2010 and introduce passenger services under electric traction from January 1, 2011.” he said..
If all the various electrification plan goes according to plan, it enable the railways to run electric loco hauled trains right from Kanyakumari to New Delhi from January 2012.
