We are all enamored about the focus of IT and ITES companies who are looking at the Tier II and Tier III cities. But now it appears that due to the enormous congestion in Tier I cities, the development of industrial clusters, corridors, estates, hubs and a whole lot of units in the services sector are choking themselves in this congestion and the private and public companies ( Non IT) are looking to move their facilities to smaller cities.
Nasscom has identified the following cities for rapid growth in the very neat future.
Chandigarh, Pune, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Mangalore, Mysore, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tiruchi.
But they also identify that the cities like Pune and Coimbatore are already overcrowded and falling into the same vicious cycle of more growth leads to more migration which leads to more growth and they think this cities are reaching a tipping point in favour of other tier II cities. The pressure on these towns has begun to show, exposing once more the inadequacies of the systems, and the inability of the private sector and the government agencies to act in tandem to promote new investment centres.
So what is the expectation of these companies ?
Better physical and social infrastructure in these towns.
So what infrastructure they are talking about ? Physical and Social infrastructure like below.
Physical infrastructure will include roads, transport, services, housing, air and rail connectivity, while social infrastructure should provide for educational institutions, health services, recreation facilities, and hotels.
Some of the companies are going away from the SEZ type development where they will build a township with all the amenities in a conclave somewhere outside the city. ( It reminds me of BHEL township.. It is so yesteryears…. We need to get over this)
Cognizant’s Managing Director and President R. Chandrasekaran says: “The primary reason for the IT industry to be attracted to a Tier II city or a Tier III city is its educational infrastructure and the resultant quality talent pool. The second important criterion is infrastructure. Availability of ‘A’ category commercial real estate space, preferably with SEZ notification, good roads, airport with good connectivity, and good hotels, is important.
Even if one or more of these may not exist initially, visible efforts to develop them in parallel become important. Otherwise, the initial enthusiasm will die down and companies may not grow in these locations.”
How very true.. It clearly says that the expectation from these companies is not that everything like great infrastructure should exist before they move in , but the public and private companies should have a plan to improve the infrastructure and should execute the same with a plan. These companies are ready to grow with the city but just needs a promise and a plan with honest execution.
Is is too tall to ask ?
I don’t think so.. This is a great opportunity for Trichy to wake up and add up / Speed up its already improving facilities.

It looks good on paper. Trichy should grab it. Imagine a Trichy with good roads connection, international airport with class facilities, interconnecting best railway system, well planned sewage system, pavements for pedestrians, well defined housing schemes etc. These days are not far off,if we allow the private participation in the basic infrastructure needs and Trichy shall be another Bangalore or Singapore.

what i really dont understand is , when there are good connectivity by road, train and by flight why are companies like satyam going to madurai to start a 50 acres campus
October 14, 2007 at 1:35 AM
Well, it’s simple. Madurai have lots of heavyweight politician compared to Trichy.
October 14, 2007 at 3:11 AM
Right, government had requested some companies to start operations in Madurai and you could see couple of big companies coming to Madurai. As usual poor Trichy is neglected by politicians though it has better connectivity and quality resources.
October 19, 2007 at 10:03 AM
Well, at last Government has made few glimpse on our Trichy. Our Trichy politicians are not good enough to make Opportunities on Trichy’s way. When I serach for software companies in Trichy it is very less in count compared to other cities like Madurai and Coimbatore.
October 22, 2007 at 11:14 AM
The good news is that trichy is not entirely neglected.Sutherland Global is going to start operations soon in Trichy. Couple of others also have big plans..
October 23, 2007 at 6:42 AM
Can anyone suggest what all companies are interested in trichy ?
I really wonder , Trichy is far better than many other cities listed for IT companies and still response has been lesser than it should deserve.
Good and wide roads , one of the very best in educational Institutions , low crime rate , low cost of living , good infrastructure and close to all Major cities likr Chennai , Bangalore etc

Hi all
Trichy is the smallest city when compared to other Tier 2 cities. Trichy will be only 50% when compared to Madurai , Then why companies shouldn’t go to Madurai. Another thing Madurai airport is going to become International airport as many airlines would like to perform their operations in Madurai rather than Trichy, this statement was given by Airport Authority of India. Have you ever seen Madurai(How big it is) , better don’t compare Trichy with Madurai please
July 15, 2008 at 1:40 AM
Hi Girish,
You should remember onething. The business & developments are based on potential of the city. It doesn’t matter whether it is big or small. Do you know how big is bangapore than chennai. It’s nothing when u compare bangapore with chennai. But still bangalore is the IT savy of india. It’s all not because of size of the city. it’s because of potential of the city.
Recently NASSCOM did one survey and released their result. Based of their research, trichy is way ahead than madurai & coimbatore in every aspects.
Do remember before writing something.
July 15, 2008 at 3:55 AM
Hi Girish,
Let me correct you .. AAI never said anything about potentail of Madurai airport or international connectivity. It is only Airport director of Madurai airport who is giving these baseless statements and you have added extra spice . No airlines have requested for International operations but few have eveinced interest.
In Trichy there has been request by several International Airlines including Air Asia, Air Arabia , Tiger airways , Malaysian Airlines for international connectivity and they have been deferred because of inadequate CISF personals. Trichy has a very good International flight response compared to other tier 2 cities in TN.
Trichy is smaller and that gives better scope of development , less congestion and more peacfullness. Unfortunately it looses in JNNURM funds for further developemnt.
Remember UP is much bigger than many states but still one of the worst so you want all companies to shift to UP ?
Even UP had Noida , Greater Noida which are class leading IT cities even better than many other IT cities
We dont mind companies going to other cities… Trichy will attract big players in near future
July 15, 2008 at 4:50 AM
Well Ramanathan.. How do you say that Banglore is bigger than Chennai, I agree with your point that Banglore is still the IT capital of India and I am proud of it but what about other industries(which are mostly found in Chennai when compared to Banglore) and please provide the link of NASSCOM which says that Trichy is way ahead of Madurai and Coimbatore… Dont blaber something…
July 15, 2008 at 6:40 AM
Just gothrough this link..
You will come to know the analysis result of Tier II cities of TN…
Trichy is agead of Madurai in All aspects…

Then what about Coimbatore… When IT export is considered trichy is far behind coimbatore and madurai
July 15, 2008 at 7:47 AM
not behind then madurai….
come with some data…
Till today Trichy IT export is larger than madurai…
you hany IT export data to claim the madurai statistics….
July 15, 2008 at 8:28 AM
Ok… Let madurai be the biggest and say the oldest… of all the cities… But what is the cuttent educational, industrial, cultural habitat when comparied with other cities… People can guess themselves and it is clearly known. No need for anybody to come with stats.
July 15, 2008 at 8:29 AM
Madurai is a big village…. that it…
July 15, 2008 at 10:01 AM
I have not seen the IT export figures of each tier 2 city of TN. But trichy at present does not have a single multinational IT company. I prefer to work in my home town but there is not chance presently.
coimbatore has CTS and madurai has Honeywell, we need atleast one big software company before we can boast in the IT field.
July 15, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Guys….
Each city has its own goodness and culture. Its no point comparing . Love your city and try to develop it . Be happy if projects are coming to our city but dont provoke or get provoked by foolish comparisons
The meenakshi amman temple is very beautiful and a marvel . So is srirangam .But in srirangam the so called guides and temple officials are nonsense. In Madurai too the temple officals are big nuisance and corrupt. However there are no guide problems as in srirangam.
The traditional culture of towns around madurai is very interesting and should be preserved. ITes are going to change all these things and eventually will makeover the original. I enjoy movies based on villages surrounding madurai.
July 16, 2008 at 7:30 AM
Thats what I am also asking Niranjan do you have any proof to show that Trichy is ahead of Madurai then how do you say… the NASSCOM’s report says only about the pontential of Trichy and so far nothing has happened if you dont agree provide some data to show it
July 16, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Kumar has some data with him regarding IT export…..
Let him take part and will give you statistics…
July 16, 2008 at 12:01 PM
NASSCOM result shows that Trichy is better suited for BPO opertaions than any other tier 2 city in TN except coimbatore.
Coimbatore is better suited in many respects except the cost advantage which Trichy is better.
Certain question still remains like Madurai is said to be more expensive than Kovai , Kovai is said to be better in Educational Front than Trichy .
I feel Trichy is far ahead of Kovai in educational Front. Bharthidasan University is highly ranked , NITT is an central govt. national level engg college , BIM is in top 20 management institiute , SASTRA is turnng world class and in arts and science we have very renouned colleges like st joseph , Bishop herber etc.
Coimbatore has only PSG (Private but good) and other self finalsing colleges
July 16, 2008 at 3:26 PM
In the state, Chennai remained the top contributor to exports, even as it continued to attract much of the software investments. Last year, Chennai contributed Rs 19,867.31 crore, Coimbatore Rs 179.10 crore and Trichy Rs 24.55 crore. Meanwhile, Pondicherry’s exports grew 51.42% to Rs 43.58 crore last year, from Rs 28.78 crore in 2005-06. Application software and system software accounted for Rs 14,077 crore or 68% of the total exports, while IT-enabled services accounted for Rs 3,519.28 crore or 17% of the total.

I did not imagine IT export from trichy to be only 24 crore. I am disapointed.
July 17, 2008 at 3:45 AM
No data here for madurai…
July 18, 2008 at 9:09 AM
Mr.Sathish,
Would like to update your statement on the educational front. Kovai is way ahead of trichy interms of educational institutions.
Coimbatore is not only having PSG. Apart from PSG, CBE has GCT, CIT, KCT, Avinashilingam deemed, Karunya deemed universities.
Out of 10 Colleges in TN, Five colleges in CBE region has ranked in the top 50 institutions in India.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chennai/Nearly_10_TN_engg_colleges_among_top_50_in_India/articleshow/3128156.cms
BTW: My intention is not argue city vs city but to clarify your question why cbe is ranked higher than trichy in terms of education.
Regards,
Ram
