As we are all eagerly anticipating the final outcome of the Modernisation effort in Trichy International Airport, reports are floating around for a low cost airport in tier II and tier III cites including Trichy and Madurai. The plans are being laid out now and the total cost of such a venture is estimated to be about 100 crore including land cost.  Big players like Changi airport ,Tata group, GMR Group and GVK Group are also keen on executing such projects.

The idea is to make these low cost airports as regional hubs for regional airlines for better connectivity to other cities nearby. They will be able to handle operations of small jets as well as slightly bigger aircraft like Boeing’s B737 or Airbus’ A320.

Looking at this, I am elated not just because we may get another airport, but if the Ministry Of Civil Aviation is looking at doing this in Trichy, that signifies the anticipated traffic increase ( both cargo and passenger) and also is paving way to make the existing airport for international traffic only in the future.

If this comes to fruition, it will be great for our commercial and industrial development.

 Way to go ..
