Daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Trichy by Air Asia starts from October 2008. Air Asia is entering this market with a cut throat price of Rs.5000 for two way tickets. AirAsia chief executive officer, Tony Fernandez, told Tamil daily Makkal Osai that the flights would provide more opportunities for budget travellers to fly to India.
Great !! Let the competition begin.

It’s certainly an excellent idea to have Air Asia connecting KLIA, Malaysia with Trichy International Airport, South India. Scores of Indian Workers in Malaysia are from Trichy, Pudukottai,Karaikudi,Devakottai,Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram. This will enable these workers to return home on a single day. Even those who are visiting Malaikottai, Srirangam,Tiruvarampur or even to Tanjore Temple on a piligrimage visits will find Air Asia services more convenient. Hats off to Dato Tony.

Niranjan,
Where did you find that the service will start in August itself??
Please share any additional details.
Thanks
July 30, 2008 at 5:49 AM
Here is the link to the news that says AirAsia will start services in August, but there is no official confirmation from AirAsia though.
Air Asia, a low-cost carrier, would soon operate direct air services on the Tiruchi-Kuala Lumpur sector.
The airline is planning daily services on the Kuala Lumpur-Tiruchi-Kuala Lumpur sector from mid-August. According to Airport sources, Civil Aviation Ministry has cleared the introduction of the service while clearances were awaited from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Indications are that the service, likely to be in the morning, would be launched by August 12. The airline may deploy A-320 aircraft for the service.

Hi everyone,
Please refer to the below extract from Bernama. AirAsia X (long haul operation of AirAsia) seems to start their flight to India, only next year.
AirAsia X Gets Nod To Fly Into India
July 16, 2007 22:22 PM
SEPANG, July 16 (Bernama) — AirAsia X has been granted the rights to enter India, but will only consider plans to fly there next year due to limited aircrafts, chief executive officer, Azran Osman-Rani said today.
He said the airline, which is expecting to receive its first leased airplane by August, has made Australia and China its priority following increased demand for low cost air travel from both countries.
“I have to prioritise as we are only going to start with one plane,” he told reporters at the launch of AirAsia’s Kuala Lumpur-Shenzen flight here.
He said the airline can only fly into India early next year when it receives the second airplane, which it hopes to receive early next year.
“With the first airplane, we can do (take turns flying) one Australian city and one Chinese city,” he said.
“With the second plane, we can do one Indian city and, either a Korean or Japanese city,” he noted.
Azran said AirAsia X is also expecting its 15 all-new Airbus A330 by late next year and has a wish to fly to London with the first aircraft received.
“We would like to fly to London and hope the government will support us in our application for landing rights,” he said.
He said since the airline will not be able to fly direct to London, it was only natural to look at the West Asian countries as stop-overs.
“We are only looking at two to three European cities but are considering another three to four cities each in China and India,” he said.
AirAsia X is owned by Fly Asian Express (FAX), a company controlled by AirAsia founder Datuk Tony Fernandes, and has a 30-year license to use the AirAsia brand and facilities.

It is crucial for trichy airport to increase its aerobridge from three to five.
The Indian Aviation Department had to go ahead with expansion plans keeping in mind of all future needs. The Trichy – pudukottai road had to be turned into 6 laned road with 3 lanes on either direction and connecting the airport through flyovers.
Trichy destination is fast gaining popularity amongst the International circles and more and more International air carriers are interested to get their landing rights, because Trichy is geographigally located in the heart of Tamilnadu and it certainly ideal point for business and tourism transit activities.
IT IS TIME TO THINK BIG FOR TRICHY.
August 10, 2008 at 1:26 PM
as of now only two aerobridges are under construction and even the new terminal can handle present traffic which has to be enlarged for the future.but infrastructure only cant do the purpose untill permission is granted for the operators to start their service. already the operations were denied by authority due apron extension and strengthening and the operators were forcefully diverted to CBE like airarabia and silkair who were waiting for their trichy operation from long ago.later cisf staff shortage was given as a reason for new operations and is still a problem which is not solved because of which evening flights are denied for various operators like paramount and deccan.so lets hope authority gives permission to operators to start their operation in their required timings.
August 11, 2008 at 2:16 AM
Give proof…The operators were not forcefully diverted to CBE… The operators choose CBE and went there due to its potential which is proved by silkair and airarabia willing to increase their frequencies to daily

AirAsia X’s Trichy flight to double passenger traffic
After announcing its Indian operations last year, AirAsia’s long-haul carrier has chosen Trichy, also known as the Rock City and a popular travel destination, located about 300 km from South India’s major gateway Chennai.
“(Total) volume of passengers, both incoming and outgoing, was about 300,000 last year and it may touch 500,000 in 2008. Once the new connectivity is established the passenger growth may increase substantially,” Sreekumar said.
The airport had given all the approvals for the carrier to begin its operation and now awaiting the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s clearance, he added.
AirAsia will be the first foreign low-cost carrier to connect Trichy and other overseas destinations. Currently, only India’s low-cost operator Air India Express flies from Trichy to major cities outside the country.
The airport, with international connectivity, especially to Singapore and the Gulf, will enable AirAsia to take advantage of regular tourists, business travellers and bulk of the migrant workers.

AirAsia X to fly to Britain in March: Founder
BUDGET carrier AirAsia X said today it plans to fly to Britain in March with London’s Stansted airport the likely destination, and that high fuel prices will not deter its expansion plans.
“Definitely it is going to happen and I am optimistic that it will happen in March,” said Datuk Tony Fernandes, AirAsia X director and founder of Southeast Asia’s largest budget carrier, AirAsia.
The Malaysia-based long-haul budget carrier had planned to launch flights to Britain in December but difficulties in securing a leased airplane forced it to postpone.
It now operates with one leased A330-300 with flights to Australia’s Gold Coast and Hangzhou in China. It is scheduled to fly to Perth and Melbourne in November.
Fernandes said AirAsia X favours Stansted, on the outskirts of London, but would finalise its plans in September when it meets with officials from Stansted as well as Manchester airport, which is its other option.
He said the carrier would use a leased A340-300 to mount a direct flight from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, which will act as a hub for other regional destinations in the AirAsia network.
“From Stansted there would be people who will fly to Malaysia and from Malaysia to anywhere else in Southeast Asia or Australia,” he said.
Fernandes said that high fuel costs will not deter the budget carrier from expanding its routes, and unveiled plans to fly to South America and Africa.
“With that (Britain) flight we are connecting two-thirds of the world. Only the Americas — South America and Central America — and Africa are not in our network, but that will come in due course,” he said.
“We have always been very optimistic. Many airlines have cut capacity but we are happy to add all our new routes. It is not expensive for us. We are still running a very high load factor and our business has been booming.”
Azran Osman Rani, CEO of AirAsia X, rejected pessimism among aviation analysts about the prospects of long-haul budget carriers, after the recent failure Hong-Kong based Oasis.
“Our model proves that low-cost long-haul can work if you do it right. The faster I expand, the faster my costs drop and the faster I can be more aggressive on my pricing. We do need to bulk up and get scale quickly,” he said.
AirAsia X has purchased a total of 25 Airbus A330-300 aircraft and is expecting delivery of the first two in October and December this year.
Hong Kong’s budget long-haul airline Oasis wound up in June after only 18 months in operation, blaming soaring fuel costs and a decision to buy aircraft instead of leasing them.
AirAsia X is an affiliate of AirAsia and Virgin Group and was launched in January 2007.
Richard Branson’s Virgin Group has taken a 20 per cent stake in the airline and the British billionaire has vowed to ensure that the project turns a profit. – AFP

AirAsia to offer fares from RM10 at Matta fair
AIRASIA says it will be making amazing offers with fares as low as from RM10 and holiday packages as low as RM165 during the Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (Matta) Fair.
In partnership with Tourism Queensland, Gold Coast Tourism and Western Australia Tourism, the airline will showcase the many attractions Australia has to offer alongside AirAsia’s extensive network providing low-cost options for travel throughout Asia Pacific.
In a statement today, the low-cost carrier said during the fair, a special show featuring cartoon characters will be performed by artistes specially flown in from Queensland, Australia.
“The cartoon characters will add to the show’s atmosphere with four daily performances, including a special Australian Outback Spectacular show and Australia’s Gold Coast, Warner Village,” the carrier said.
“We are delighted to participate at the Matta Fair and offer exciting entertainment and a variety of exclusive giveaways to attendees over the three days,” AirAsia regional head of commercial, Kathleen Tan said.
Other than low fares and holiday packages, the airline is organising a “Spin the Wheel” competition for customers who buy a flight or accommodation to win a variety of prizes.
The fair will be held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur from September 5-7. — Bernama

Air Asia is helpless as Indian authorities are yet to give clearence for the route.I dont think it will be easy for private airlines to get clearence to operate from Trichy to destinations like Singapore,KL and Mid east countries.
Because, the state owned carriers have monopoly in these sectors.

After launch airasia to Trichy, lot of foreign workers who came from india can go to home town atleat once in a year,

September 9, 2008 at 6:45 PM
This is really bad news if few board members are against starting the service to India.Lets hope things are sorted out as soon as possible.

Where you get this information that few members of the airasia board are opposing?

Air Asia to start Nov 1.. Silk Air to follow ..
Air Asia, an international low cost carrier, will enter the Indian market with its first service to the country on the Kuala Lumpur-Tiruchi-Kuala Lumpur sector, scheduled for launch from November 1.
The airline had obtained the security clearance from Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and is awaiting clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commencing operations.
A two-member team from the airline, led by Ahmad Ismail, Manager, Standards and New Stations, Air Asia, visited the airport on Thursday for finalisation of the operational and logistical details. They held separate discussions with S. Sreekumar, Airport Director, and T. H. Radhakrishnan, Station Manager, Air India, which will be the ground handling agency.
Speaking to The Hindu after inspecting the facilities at the new terminal building under construction at the airport, Mr. Ismail said the flights on the Kuala Lumpur-Tiruchi-Kuala Lumpur sector would be a daily service. The airline would deploy an all-economy class Airbus 320, with a passenger capacity of 180, on the route. The flight from Kuala Lumpur would arrive here at 8.55 a.m. and depart at 9.25 a.m. (Airports Authority of India officials at the Tiruchi Airport have already cleared the schedule, sources said). Mr. Ismail said the airline would look to connecting more Indian destinations after the launch of the Tiruchi service. Tiruchi, he said, offered a good potential and the airline would seek to tap the central and south Tamil Nadu market. Meanwhile, airport sources said the state-of-the-art new terminal building, being built at an investment of Rs.70 crore, would become operational by the end of this financial year. Airport sources said Silk Air has also evinced interest in launching services in the Tiruchi-Singapore sector

Extremely inconvinient schedule.
If the Air Asia schedule gets implemented., it will be incovinient for passenger from US connecting to Trichy and other southern cities of Tamil Nadu. Because flights from US, pacific coast cities arrive in KUL by noon, where as the Air Asia flights departs from KUL departs early in the morning., based on the timings mentioned in postings above.
Already KUL is being less preferred by US travellers because of the new transit visa requirements, higher taxes, discontinuation of daily services to US and now incovinient connection schedul to new south indian desitnation, Trichy.
I am sure now lot of people from US will switch to Singapore Airlines/ Silk Air. Air Silk’s connection schedules to India are very convinient. To add more, Singapore Air’s tickets are cheaper than Malaysian.
Bye bye Kualalumpur. I just booked my non Malaysian Airlines flight to US in my past 10 years of travel from Chennai to US.
October 1, 2008 at 7:37 AM
It is october and still no official word from Air Asia about services to Trichy.I have my own reservation if services will start in November as DGCA is yet approve the route.
October 11, 2008 at 3:16 AM
I have been waiting for this service with bated breath and because of this, I have also missed cheaper tickets offered by airindiaexpress.
Why no one issues an official statement as to where is the bottleneck?
Is it due to :-
Air Asia X bluffing us while they wait for their new planes?
Indian Bueracrats holding this up with the hope Air Asia would bribe them?
Any other reason?
I am feeling dejected!!!
I have also posted a query in the Airasia blog enquiring about the launch but only to be removed by the moderator. (Apparently, the rule of their blog says that they will not entertain queries on new routes)
October 12, 2008 at 2:13 AM
Air Asia is ready&prepared,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but awaiting for final take-off nod from DGCA(India)……………..as per Air Asia staff info in KL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 12, 2008 at 6:58 AM
When is the DGCA nod expected and when is the booking expected to begin? If it is to start on Nov 1st as informed, I think they should have started the bookings by now. Any updates on this guys?
October 12, 2008 at 9:50 AM
Can we apply pressure to DGCA so that they will look into this promptly and to make sure that they are not delaying this purposely so that they can make some quick bucks through bribe?
October 12, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Malaysian News Agency Bernama’s news:
Malaysian Carriers To Expand Operations Network By Year-end
October 13, 2008 11:23 AM
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) — Low budget and community carriers — AirAsia, AirAsia X and Firefly — plan to further increase their network expansion by year-end.
From Kuala Lumpur, Air Asia X will continue its network expansion to Australia, starting services to Melbourne and Perth in November, said Malaysia Airports Bhd in a statement Sunday.
AirAsia will start flying to Tiruchilapally, India, while Air Niugini, a new carrier to Kuala Lumpur, is planning to start new services to Papua New Guinea.
Firefly will also start two new points from Penang to Medan and Banda Aceh.
“No new carriers are expected on the fully deregulated Kuala Lumpur-Singapore trunk route from Dec 1, 2008,” said Malaysia Airports.
AirAsia and Tiger Airways have already announced considerable frequency increases, with both airlines adding an additional four daily frequencies, Air Asia up to six daily and Tiger Airways five daily from one daily. “This means there are an additional 56 weekly flights on top of the current 129 weekly flights between KL and Singapore, an increase of over 40 percent,” it added.

Air Asia now expected to start sometime in December. The DGCA playing games for sure.
Malaysian carrier to launch low-fare flights to India
Hyderabad (PTI): Airfares on the India-Malaysia route are likely to decline in the next few months, with no-frill Malaysian carrier Air Asia planning a major foray into the Indian market at fares ranging between Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000.
“We are planning to start daily services to Trichy by the first week of December, depending on grant of all necessary clearances,” Air Asia chief Toni Fernandes told PTI here.
He said the airline and its fully-owned subsidiary, Air Asia X, were looking at launching services to several cities, mostly in South India, soon after starting its first flight to Trichy which had “a potential capacity of double daily flight operations”.
“The fares could range from USD 100 to USD 150,” Fernandes, who founded the no-frill carrier, said.
Air Asia plans to fly to 12 cities, including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode, he said, adding that the airline had already studied the potential of these Indian cities.
Regarding Hyderabad, he said both Air Asia and Air Asia X could operate to this metro which had a large potential.
Observing that India had “tremendous opportunities” for growth in the aviation sector, Fernandes said his airline, during its six years of operations, had first concentrated on serving the market in the ASEAN nations, then China. “And now it is the turn of India where we have major plans.”
Aznan Osman Rani, CEO of Air Asia X, said “We are looking at the Indian market over the next five years.”

AirAsia to mount Penang-Chennai flights soon
By Marina EmmanuelPublished: 2009/06/02
LOW-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd (5099) will launch daily flights from Penang to Chennai, India in three to four months.
The airline has been granted rights to fly the route by the government.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the government is also in talks with other carriers to fly to regional destinations from the Penang International Airport this year.
“The liberalisation of air services is not only limited to increased flights to Singapore from Malaysian cities.
“We are currently in discussions with a few airlines to fly from Penang to Asian destinations,” he told reporters after launching AirAsia’s Singapore-Penang inaugural flight in Penang yesterday.
Also present were Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes and the airline’s chairman Datuk Aziz Bakar.
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) withdrew flights on the Kuala Lumpur-Penang-Chennai sector in 2001, as part of a route rationalisation programme.
On whether AirAsia has put proposals to the government to fly into more Indian cities, Fernandes said: “Not at the moment because we are short of aircraft, but we are looking at more destinations.”
Meanwhile, Ong said the commencement of Silk Air’s direct flights from Penang to Singapore yesterday, along with those to be offered by Firefly, Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia, bring to a total of 49 weekly flights operating between Penang and Singapore.
Currently, MAS and Singapore Airlines are plying the route.
“By March next year, the frequency of flights to Singapore from Penang will increase to 84 times per week,” he added.
Fernandes said to date, 17,000 seats have been sold by the airline since it opened the route for sale on April 27.
“AirAsia is looking at carrying 60,000 guests on this route by year-end,” he added.
Besides Singapore, AirAsia also connects Penang travellers to other international destinations such as Bangkok, Jakarta, Medan and Macau.
