More details are emerging on the planned Trichy – Karur Highway ( Toll Road) enhancements.

  • It will strengthen and develop the present two-lane road with paved shoulders for 59 km and convert the remaining stretch into a four-lane road for the rest 21 km.
  • The new project takes off from Panjappur in Tiruchi district on the NH45 B and ends at Sukkaliyur in Karur district.
    • Three bypass sections – in Tiruchi between Panjappur and Andanallur, at Kulithalai between Marudur and Melakurapalayam and at Karur between Veerarakkiam and Sukkaliyur – will mark the project, according to the NHAI Project Director, M. Thangamani.
  • The Kulithalai bypass section will run parallel and proximate to the Cauvery’s left bank skirting the town and a retaining wall will be constructed all along the 10-km stretch.
  • The Karur bypass section, running to 15 km, will be constructed as a four-lane stretch and will have one ROB and a flyover rising above the State Highway 74 not far from the Karur Collectorate.
  • In the Tiruchi bypass section, two road over-bridges, one major bridge across the Kodingal river and two flyovers near Panjappur and Andanallur will be constructed. The special feature of the road over-bridge at Andanallur is that a portion of the “landing” would extend as a “trumpet type”’ onto the riverbed.
  • Work is expected to commence in another six months and a planned end date of 2010.

Anna University in Trichy is bringing back semester system for its first year’s curriculum again. In deference to the requests from the principals of affiliated colleges, the VC of AU thinks that 14 weeks is enough for the students to get a handle on the first semester. Although we are going GaGa about the technology sector in India, farming is still the backbone of the economy. The farmers in Trichy are adept in growing bananas and Mangoes for a long time but now they are getting trained in changing their practices in such a way to produce mangoes and bananas using European Good Agricultural Practices (EurepGAP). This will pave the way to produce the fruits to export to US and Europe.

From the news report from The Hindu:

Talking to the media on the sidelines of a day-long seminar on ‘EurepGAP standards for mangoes’, organised jointly by the FICCI and the Directorate of Marketing and Agri Business here on Monday, he said that though farmers cultivated quality fibre-free mango varieties including the ‘Imampasanthu,’ and a wide range of bananas, their earnings were inadequate.

Young graduates from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University would be posted at each farm to guide the farmers on cultivation practices, fair utilisation of irrigation water and crop protection methods as per EurepGAP norms.

Hopefully the academic knowledge gets transferred to the farmers and the practical knowledge to the students.

Bharathidasan University is being upgraded to a Central Varsity moving from State Govt university to a Union Govt University paving the way to get more comprehensive research projects and grants. The central govt has plans to create 25 varsities and this will be one of them.  Along with this move BU will have more IT centered curriculum also from the next academic year. There will not be any change in the operations of the affiliated colleges due to this but all the affiliated colleges will also get better research facilities and more IT oriented curriculum and facilities.

One noted IT oriented curriculumthat will be added to the programmes will be BSc. in Animation. Animation is a very demanding field of study in the Western Countries , especially Japan and US where Video games are in very high demand. India is stepping into this in the right time when the companies in those countries are going to look for elsewhere for production now.

The affiliated colleges will be equipped with the required equipments for this course but not sure how will it be staffed as it is a specialised field in computer science applications.

We will see but anyway this is a great recognition to the academia in Trichy.

With Trichy Airport raising to the standard of International Airport with its facilities and connections, plans for creating a ring road around Trichy that connectes Navalpattu and the passenger traffic between Trichy and Bangalore are being recogonized as a true indicator of potential IT resource availability in Trichy. According to the ELCOT director Mr. Uma Shankar, for the establishment of one million square feet built up space in the sprawling 135 acre site at Navalpattu, the ELCOT is in the process of readying architectural design.  The plan is to have smaller companies operate from the built up space and allow the bigger players to create their own campusses.

The one striking feature to this article in Hindu is, it does not give us any new or specific information about the park. All the information present in the article is what we know already. Would have been great if it could have provided some information on which companies have agreed to setup offices and what is their proposed timetable. I don’t see that anywhere in the article.

Also the ringroad plans are being developed now and no one knows how many layers of approval ( both financial and political) that it has to go through before it gets approved.  There is no timetable information here yet.

Wikimapia is a user driven site that is trying to emulate wikipedia’s success in information. It is a peer driven site where anyone can submit information about any location in the world and it will peer reviewed and approved before becoming official.  I wish the peer review process is transparent so atleast we will know what are the resources that were used for reviewing.  Without this, I don’t put my money on the validity of the review.

I wish the Hindu article had given some specifics about the development instead of putting together all the facts known before.

Hopefully we will get some great information on our IT park’s progress very soon.

Last week it was SBI that announced the introduction of its ATM in Trichy stations. Now it Canara Bank’s turn. Canara Bank has announced plans for introducing ATMs in Trichy division railway stations including Trichy junction, Fort, Tiruchi Town, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Adhiramapattinam, Aduthurai, Neyveli and Panruti. No time table as to when this will be in effect is given but I hope it does not take long to setup one.

Trichy – Dindugal and Trichy – Karur roads are going to be toll roads soon. The Reliance Energy Limited has bagged a huge contract worth Rs2320 crore to construct the above mentioned roads and Salem – Udumalaipet road.  This will be a turnkey project and will have a concession agreement for 25 – 30 years. ( Does this mean that we have to pay to use these roads for that long ? )

These projects will be performed by  three special purpose vehicles (SPVs) — SU Tollways Pvt Limited, TU Tollways Pvt Limited and TK Tollways Pvt Limited and aims to ease high traffic density in these areas.

Estimated completion date is 2010.

The 80-km-long Trichy-Karur project (NH67) has its construction cost at Rs 516 crores, and will include four-lanes of two major bypasses and construction of two-lane highway. It will have Toll Plaza at two locations.

The 88-km Trichy-Dindigul project (NH 45)is to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 576 crores. It includes construction of 4-lane dual carriageway for the complete length and construction of 2-lane service roads in urban areas.

I agree that Trichy with its burgeoning potential requires such smooth roadway connection to their neighbouring cities. But I have only one request / reservation in this. Whenever we start constructing roads, we first cut down trees and make the land barren and flat. I have not seen any road that is constructed accomodating the greenery and I don’t expect this to be an exception. We have some pretty scenes on the way to karur along the banks of cauvery which I hate to miss.

Will REL listen to this plea and be a difference maker. ………….

Trichy railway station with its yesteryear facade is getting some modern amenities inside.  In addition to getting new Platform roofs and facilities, it is also have ATMs now. The SBI ATM in Trichy Station is operational now for public. Trichy Railway Manager during that occasion said that during the current year 32 ATMs will be setup in various railway station in Trichy Divisions. In future this will also be morphed into ticket vending Kiosks as the software to enable this feature is in development.

I love using ATMs just because it eliminates the ridiculous wait and filling of forms in the bank to get our money, not to forget the mucky smell of ledgers in many banks.
