Thanx to fellow Tiruchians Damodaran and Nanz’ s initiative, we can collect our thoughts and experiences in Trichy airport and present it to the concerned authorities as our feedback. This should help them to understand what is the perception of their airport by the travellers and should give them a valuable measuring stick in this important time of transition. As Nanz says, we need to get some specifics to the authorities , both good and bad, like what date a particular incident happened and by which flight the passenger was travelling. Please don’t write any personal information in this.
So I would like to invite fellow tiruchians to give some specifics on incidents and things that they would like to change. We will work as a group and take it to the concerned.
Way to go….! Democracy at work in fullforce …
It is amazing that we are here talking about immigration facilities in Trichy Airport. Gone all the days of a sleepy airport with archaic machines and reams of paper to do something as simple of verifying whether the passenger who is about to travel or already in air ready to arrive are in Look out Circular issues by the State and National Law enforcement agencies. Trichy airport with its increasing attention has an integrated system of 12 computers connected to a backbone which can be used to verify the passengers’ travel docs easily by querying with the passport details.
I know that it should be this simple and this should not be a big news item . BUT, the very fact that this is featuring in a newspaper says a lot about where Trichy airport was and the steps it takes to move forward.
The Trichy corporation is initiating an ambitious plan of burying electric lines underground in some of the major areas like Andar Street, Rockfort , Nandikovil Street, Gandhipuram in Thillai Nagar, Officers’ Colony in Puthur, Srinivasa Nagar and Fathima Nagar in Woraiyur very soon. It is a good plan which will make unauthorized power tapping difficult in addition to increase the beauty of the city. Whoever looked up when walking in Andar St, Chinnakadai Street ( or is it sandhu) will have their head spin as the tangled mess of the wires crisscrossing the streets in all directions. This will reduce the powercuts that happen by accidental or natural snapping of wires.
This plan requires a very good planning as some of the streets in discussion here are so narrow, that the traffic has to be closed before they do this. Also , the corporation is notorious for leaving the ditches partially closed. This also requires excellent coordination between Water works, Roadways and electricity dept to pull this off. ( I think this is the major task in this whole assignment)
But again, the Coimbatore Corp started the plans for this and now it is Trichy’s turn to pull this off.
Way to Go!!
Now that Coimbatore IT park is well on its way and progressing smoothly, the ELCOT is shifting its focus towards Madurai and Trichy. It appears that so far 12 companies have evinced interest in setting up facilities here in Trichy. No information on their size but looks like there are no big wigs here yet. But in-spite of this, ELCOT is looking for 98 acres of additional land for construction. The Hindu’s report on this says something very interesting .
It goes like this.
ELCOT will acquire the plots in the vicinity of the IT Park that were sold a few months ago by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board through auction before laying an approach road. The small plots, along with toilets and bathrooms, which the Board constructed for people from the low-income group a decade ago, were lying unsold till a few months ago.
If I am reading this right, ELCOT is planning to repurchase land from whomever purchased from Govt in an auction some time ago. So ELCOT , an independent entity, whose decisions are controlled by TN govt., is planning to repurchase the land that was basically theirs a few months ago. Also worth noting is these plots were unsold a few months ago.
So is it just me smelling something fishy here or it just looks that way.
Anyway, whoever bought this land in auction ( either with or without inside info) is going to make good money in a short time..

I bet there will be more than one tiruchian, who join us here, travelled in that flight. If they share their experiences with us about the Customs and luggage handling etc. in Trichy airport , it will be great and will also allay the many fears about the standard of Trichy airport.
Any input?

Now with the cellphone being ubiquitous, the city bus stands and bus shelters are getting cell phone chargers for some emergency charging of the equipment when it is drained out. It is available in Khajamalai busstand and will be gradually implemented in other places.
The idea is great until people exhibit discipline in using the charger only for a short term and don’t use it regularly when they wait for the buses every morning or in any regularity.
Here is the progress on Trichy Airport upgrade.
First Let’s see the effect of the upgrade on Airlines.
- Many Airlines are queuing up to operate from / to / through Trichy.
- KingFisher is operating connection to Chennai and Bangalore.
- Air India Express is connecting to Dubai and Singapore
- Malaysian Airlines is planning to connect Kualalumpur and Singapore.
- Air Asia is planning to connect to KualaLumpur.
- Oman Airways has plans to connect to Muscat.
- Air Arabia has completed the market survey around Trichy area.
Now let’s look at the cause for this excitement – Upgrade itself.
- Runway is expanded to 8000 ft. Further expansion to 12,500 feet will be commenced after getting land from State Govt.
- New Air Terminal Complex in 50 acres to be completed in 2008.
- Canopies at the arrival area. ( Canopies !!! – May be it is a commercial term for roof over arrival area)
- Extended aprons to house2 to 3 aircrafts at a time.
- Modern equipments for control tower.
Hurray!! This may not make the Trichy airport like Changi .. But sure it will make it effective to handle multiple aircrafts and more passengers. Until the new terminal is done, I think the arriving international passengers will have adjust with the existing terminal and whatever facilities they provide.
