The Govt Of Tamilnadu has decided to create two anna univ in Trichy and kovai respectively to “manage” the burgeoning technical universities. Anna University ( my alma matar, btw) was unique and was competing with IIT (M) for student talent in the 90’s. Now with making to “manage” technical universities, it has lost its focus and its edge. Now trying to create two more institutions with the same name is just the last straw on the camel’s back.
Now Anna univ is one among many.
Talk about destroying a great institution.
I found this Govt Of India Press Report detailing the expansion work planned in Trichy Airport. It also talks about Coimbatore and Madurai airports as well.
We were all wondering how Walmart will survive Tiruchy. Now there was a report sometime ago that Spencer’s is looking to expand to tier II cities including Trichy.

Yes.. It is the same Spencer’s who have a fantastic shopping complex in Chennai where some landmark tamil movies have been shot. Not sure where they are going to open kadais, but my bet will be in affluent Cantonment area and not in Maingaurdgate area. ( I am not sure whether there are any more buildings left in NSB road which does not belong to Sarathaas or Mangal & Mangal)

While all the attention is focused on identifying the location for the IT parks in Trichy, there is another development that is going on quietly. Tiruchy is getting some industries other than IT. There is a tender request for the particpation in Special Economic Zone in perambalur. You can read about the tender here. The Request for Expression Of Interest details about the type of industries that are being targeted to be setup.
Thanjavur Expressways, a build, operate and transfer project has the financial closure. This project includes the design , construction , development, operation and maintenance of the stretch between Tiruchi and Tanjavur on NH 67. This is going to be toll road with concession period of 20 years.
It will great to have a broad road to ease the traffic between cities and with the impending IT parks in Tiruchi and if it gets off as expected, we need all the infrastructure we can to handle the people and business inflow. But the flip side to it is, we have some fantastic green belt between Tiruchi and Tanjavur which may get sucked in and converted to roads. I see this happenening in the highway project between Chennai and Tiruchi. Hopefully , we can built this new tollway around without destroying the beauty of VaZhai Thottams.

The Trichy Puddukotai broad gauge line will be opened to public from Jan 05th. It will be inagurated by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram at a function in Pudukkottai on the day.

I am still waiting for the day when we let the workers who worked in the hot sun to finish this project to inagurate. It will be like showing off their work with pride. Instead we are still wasting tax payers’ money to get a finance minister to do this inaguration on which he has no part except to approve the funding . ( and that funding also usually comes from World Bank aid)
