As I mentioned in my previous post, Trichy Airport is a small airport but an interesting one. With more and more airlines connecting Trichy , the requirement for getting some space, equipments to handle baggages etc. becomes challenging also. So Trichy airport is expanding. It appears that the airport is getting a new terminal building by the end of 2007 and may also get the runway extended to handle bigger aircraft than the 737 that are coming in.

Now Industries are coming up more. To meet the commercial Develpment, Trichy Airport to be improved Lot. Hope it will happen. Why don’t we send mails to concern officias.
I attended a Power Plant industrial exhibiton convened by GB Engineering, stalled by most of other big industries in Trichy and sorroundings.
Congrats to Host!
February 23, 2007 at 5:53 AM
First of all I thank host Trichian for doing a sincere and fabulous job
Air Asia ’s CEO Mr. Tony Fernandez , Malaysian born Indian origin has been vying up to schedule regular services to Trichy as it would enable them to have code share agreement between Air India Express which enable them to have passengers from Gulf who intend to travel South East asian Countries via Trichy by transferring to Air Asia flights . This Rock Fort city will be soon adorned as the transit hub , which will have travellers with stop over plans . This would definitely boost and promote the image of Trichy – globally. And no doubt there will be good time for business and comercial establihments.
On the contrary the Airport Authority nad Customs has to review up the existing procedures at the airport. Still travellers are weary about the hassles encountered with the custom officials. For nothing they willbe asked to pay duty and even if they are entitled to import some goods without duty they will be asked to pay . Can any one explain to me why they adopt this differential regulation between Airports
I requset the officials to look into this issues. If not minding this hassles passengers would avoid using the airport and would endanger the scope of development
Thanks & Rgs Meiya

Hi Meiyappan, thanks for your concern, and for your info, gone are the days of kuruvi, with which, going through all the hassels as mentioned.
Currently, the image of Trichy international airport is in par with any other International airports in India, and personally myself, have been travelling from Singapore to Dubai via Trichy for the past 3 years, using Sri Lankan airlines.
Hence, the only hassle at Trichy International airport now, is lack of various international air services, so much so, that we have to make bookings far ahead for the one and only Sri Lankan airlines available here now to Gulf countries.
Nevertheless, several international airlines plan to start operation soon at Trichy, thus, making Trichy International Airport, equally important and being recognised as any other International airports in India.
Hope, your perception, as well as, others like yourself, could be realised.
February 23, 2007 at 9:27 AM
Thanks Maran for sharing your experience with us. I was also worried about the treatment of Airport officials in handling duty matters. I was under the impression that the globalisation message does not reached Trichy airport officials. Next time I definitely hope to fly to Trichy directly from Singapore where I am employed in a multinational company.
Thanks Maran for your eye opener,
Balamurugan

We are facing lot problem to visit to Trichy as there is not direct flight to trichy from Kuwait. Needless to state that most of the power stations in Gulf (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE) are procuring Airpreheater spares & elemens & Heat Exchangers, Boiler tubes, valves from Trichy based industries like GEECO, GB Engineering & BHEL as the business activities are held-up for want of a/m service. So, corrective action to be taken by State & Central Govt. failing which other sates will grab from TN. Officials/pototical parties to be wake-up to implement more direct air services from Kuwait to Trichy
February 25, 2007 at 8:51 AM
There are 2 flights weekly from Trichy to Kuwait vis Calicut!

February 27, 2007 at 4:53 AM
Hi Sanju, you can take Srilankan airlines from Dubai to Trichy with transit at Colombo (you have to change plane there). Alternately, you can take Indian Airlines which flies from Sharjah to Trichy daily. One more option. You can fly to Bangalore from Dubai and take Kingfisher airlines to Trichy. Happy flying to Trichy

Sanju,
In today’s Hindu there’s an article that TRZ-DXB service will commence from 26th March. AI express schedule also confirms this. If you are flying from US, why don’t you fly to Bangalore and take Kingfisher to Trichy? Happy flying
March 6, 2007 at 10:30 AM
Hi Trichy,
Wonderful site with lots of info on Trichy. Keep up the good work guys… I heard the runway extension work is completed at the Trichy Airport and also that some more intl airlines such as Emirates (from Dubai) and Air Arabia (from Sharjah) are commencing flights to TRICHY. Is that true? The govt should put the Trichy on the intl map. Look at the state of Kerala, how many intl airports they hav got… we need to compete… for the betterment of all our people… and most importantly the customs official in Trichy Airport should stop harrassing all passengers… i heard a lot of complaints about them too…
March 6, 2007 at 1:14 PM
Hi Ibrahim, it’s deeply sad to hear from many people like yourself having a great great misunderstandings, pertaining to Trichy airport custom official’s harrassments, but at the same time, having high regard to all other International airport in the country. Well it’s absolutely contrary, childish and absurd.
Anyway, in the course of my regular travel experience at the Trichy airport till now, to&fro Kuwait, never before with myself nor to any other travelling passengers that I know of, were being harassed or put to great deal of misery.
But, in stark contrast, after arriving at the ARRIVAL LOUNGE, right from the immigration till taking of luggages, and then, getting out of the gate, takes no more than 20 minutes, or perhaps, in even lesser at times.
Please note, custom officials in India are always on the rotational basis, being posted from one airport to another, as well as, various other postings, as and when required.
Therefore, perhaps, you, as well as, many others who are of same views, must have been misunderstood totally from somebody, who might be jealous and or, trying to tarnish the image, in the pursuit of not allowing Tamil Nadu airports to grow and develop into World Class International airports.
March 7, 2007 at 7:53 AM
I do notice a lot of discussion on the trichy aiprot in here, the last one commenting on customs officials. The bottomline is that NONE of the indian airports have either the infrastructure or staff to match up to international standards. We have to gracefully accept the facts…
Trichy Airport isn’t any different; i have no clue how this gentleman manages to exit the trichy airport in 20 mins!!! Almost every time i land in there, i find the immigration staff show total disregard for women & children. And 9 out of 10 times passengers violently argue with immigration staff for different reasons, mostly due to the ignorance of the staff to understand and implement immigration procedures.
Here is a classical example of how bad it can get….i once noticed a fellow passenger being confronted by an immigration staff. The staff questioned the passenger for possesing a ticket to travel to the middle east when he only holds a srilankan passort. The staff apparently was of the opinion that a srilankan citizen should travel only to srilanka and not elsewhere!!! It was appalling…
Baggage handling is one of the worst highlight of this airport. It takes ages to offload baggages even from an ATR aircraft and load it on a belt that is only slightly bigger than our waist belts! I’m sure many readers here would agree that many baggages have been broken or damaged coz of the way it is handled at this airport.
The customs however int he recent past has been more polite and i do agree that there isn’t any harrassment unless ofcourse you are an offender.
We indians have learnt to live with short-comings in all the services rendered to us and hence do not accept it when someone complains. I with all my heart hope that, not just trichy but all the indians airports raise to international standards but we are NO WHERE near that point just as yet. And the only way to communicate the message is to criticize until the ever slumbering indian government wakes up to reality.
March 8, 2007 at 6:38 AM
Hi Jeeva, well after seeing ur reply I was quite amazed, where you had mentioned the remarks are very childish and so on. But I’m sharing my bitter experience of the airport official and the baggage handlers. When I had arrived at the Trichy airport from Sharjah, the baggage handler was asking me to give him some money, I said I wont, he just walked off without putting my baggage in the Xray area. I informed the airport police official who instead told me to give him something (money) so that baggage can be screened. Finally after giving him AED 5 he did it. Finally it took me 2 hours to get out of the terminal, after my baggage was opened and each and every item was checked just because I did not pay the baggage handler initially.
And it is also shocking to read that you exited out of the airport in 20 minutes. Was that a domestic flight or an intl one, may be u r a minister or a diplomat or a senior govt servant… whatever it is… we ordinary people have to get used to this kind of life…
March 8, 2007 at 9:24 AM
Thanks Ibrahim, and many many thanks to Ashok Devaraj, for your detailed and wise comment on the current Trichy airport climate, as well as, Indian airports’ culture in general.
I’m only an engineering consultant, travelling regularly to gulf countries from Trichy airport. Due to my regular usage, obviously, get to know the staffs in general.
Clearing the airport on the whole of my procedural process by 20 minutes, was meant to explain my earliest exit experience that I had before. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Well, your above recent comments are contradictory and generally misconstrued. Initially, mentioned Trichy custom officials harrassing the passengers, and then, next, mentioning it was the baggage handler was the culprit, through your personnel experience.
So, please do not pull a fast one over this matter, as our good friend, Mr.Ashok Devaraj, has already mentioned on his last article, about the current culture and mentality of Indian airports in general, is truly acceptable and commendable.
Well, could only wish&hope, our Indian airports would learn and improve sooner, from both criticism, as well as, from other well established World Class International Airports.
March 9, 2007 at 7:29 PM
I do not agree with Mr.Ashok on commenting that none of the Indian airports match International standards. Now, what do you call International standards? I am from Trichy, living in Singapore and have travelled to all continents except South America. I have been to many major and minor airports all over the world and I dare to say that Indian airports are indeed good. I have been through Chennai / Delhi / Trichy airports and had no problem whatsover. Few years back in Trichy airport, I was picked by Customs for having two cameras and one officer patiently explained the customs rules. He told me he was not expecting any money on personal front, but asked me to pay the duty in the counter, which I did. I agree that everything in Trichy airport is small. Wait Gentlemen – it will develop soon.
March 10, 2007 at 12:29 PM
Hi Guys,
Let us keep up this site with sharing our knowledge, experience either good or bad and healthy debate like the one we have about Trichy Airport.
Personally I have been flying to Trichy very frequently for the last 2 years from Dubai as my family is there now and I never ever had any problem with either the customs or A.Authorities. Do you know the secret…. It is very simple. You wear a suit, have a good personality, forget your Tamil momentarily and use English, French or even any aborgin languages you know and you are through. When I say it is easy for me to get thr’, I am talking about my experience; it does not necessarily hold true for everybody. For a normal labourer who returns from Gulf after 2 to 3 years of hardwork, ignorant and anxious, what kind of welcome he gets would reflect the true nature of our officals and authorities. But as it is natural in animal kindom (“Odura Naai kandaa, thuruttura Naaikku Kondattam”; The chasing dog loves to run after a scared dog), you can not expect a better treatment unless people are aware of their rights.
I generally try to help these guys in my own way. Waiting for Trichy Flight at Colombo Airport, I spot out these guys and get them the breakfast or lunch coupons from Srilankan airlines. Cheating of these guys by authorites start from there. They do not get these on their own; I get it for them and while having meal with them, I explain their rights to them. Many instances of flight delays for more than 8 Hrs at Colombo, I have have to literally fight with Airlankan for Hotel Accommodation and I have taken these guys to the hotels.
When we arrive at the Trichy Airport, they cling to me and as I act like their guardians at the customs, they do not get harassed. This is being narrated so that every one of us can help the unfortunate travel mates without much effort; “HELP OTHERS; YOU WILL BE HELPED’.
March 11, 2007 at 8:23 AM
It appears that Anbu has not really experienced international standards and yet feels indian airports are getting there??!!! And it is ironical he mentions Delhi airport as one example. I flew in and out of Delhi Airport between 31st- 5th March 07 and can willfully talk here about my woes.
Both arrival and departure points were close to crumbling or shall we say reeking infrastructure. The exit indicators were not lit, the corridors were stuffy, dirty and smelt like public toilets. Sign boards indicating facilities were either broken or didn’t really “indicate”. The perpaid taxi stand was pathetic with no queues leaving the western tourists who travelled long hours exasperated and helpless(so much for “incredible india”).
Departure are was undescribable…there wasn’t any indication of airlines names in baggage screening; No display of flight details in the check-in counters and no help for women/children/disabled to handle baggages. The entire airport was in a shockingly pathetic state. Carelessness and ignorance were written all over… It left me to wonder the attitude of the government towards other “smaller” airports if the capital’s was in such a bad shape.
I talked to guys in-charge and the reply was completely off the mark. I was informed that a complete revamp project by private organizations has been authorized and so AAI didn’t feel the need to maintain the existing facilities!!! According to them, it wasn’t simply their job anymore.
I dont mean to be anti-indian here but the fact of the matter is we are simply not even offered the basic choice. I have used Delhi,Mumbai,Bangalore,Chennai,Trichy,Cochin, calicut,Amristar,Nagpur,Hyderabad and Pune. My ratings are Cochin,Chennai, bangalore and Hyderabad. Trichy, Delhi and Mumbai wouldn’t even make it to the top 20 in my list!
We have all been “waiting” for too long Anbu….being born as indians we have been doing that all our life!
Many thanks to Deen’s insight on helpless travel mates! I wish everyone of us here pass on this message and help those around us as and when we can.
March 11, 2007 at 9:16 AM
Though there are two weekly flights from Kuwait to Trichy by indian Airlines, it has two stoppage (1) Fujarah/Ras Al Khaima (2) Calicutt, causing two hours delay. If IA t or AIE start direct flights from Kuwait to Trichy via Chennai or sharajah or Dubai any points in UAE, will be much useful and minimizing running hours.
March 11, 2007 at 4:33 PM
Hi,
I’m working in Middle East for the past few years and always finding difficulty in the connecting flights to Trichy, so i’d like to know the inter national flight details from UAE to Trichy ASAP.
Thanks

Hi Ashok & Anbu !
As Kannadasan has said,” Unnai Arinthal, Nee Unnai Arinthal, Intha Ulagathil Poradalam”, unless we have a true picture of ourselves, we can not uplift ourselves to compete with others.
As Ashok has pointed out rightly, we are far away from the International Standards in many aspects regarding the Airport Facilities. Delhi being the Capital of our country is the worst case. I travlled from Delhi to Dubai in 1976 and the last I went there was Dec, 2006. It did not reflect the growth of our country in the same proportion… and it was unbeleivable to see its pathetic condition. The Dubai Airport of 1976 and to-day is called the real growth. And as you must be aware, all International visitors love the experience of transiting thr’ Dubai Airport. If I have to put the increase of standard in %, Dubai has achieved 90% and Delhi –25%. I do not think I am being negative but only by accepting the fact and problems with us, we can move forward.
Any way, as Trichy Airport is a growing baby, it is easier to shape it right now, the way we want it to grow. Hope the authorities get the point and move forward. We should support them in their effort whatever the way we can.
March 13, 2007 at 11:57 AM
Mr.Deen,
I do agree with your comments. By the way i want to make one point here, In India most of the Airports Custom Officers are looking for bribe, if that has changed we could get good reputation about India. Especially in Trichy, i could witness that customs officer took(Steal) small things, blade, powder, soap etc… few years ago. The moment i noticed that i was astonished…it was like a small mountain under his table…I was just murmouring in my heart that I dont have Job I’m leaving my hometown…but these guys are having Govt.Job but behaving like a begger…Y not worst than begger. Because begger profession everybody will know…these people are wearing uniforms as an officer but doing such things cant diggist. it will damage our Indian Values..and reputation. Hope it will change like corruption free country like Singapore soon.

I am delighted to hear the developments in Trichy airport and about the new airlines that are operating. Thanks for posting about the same.
But I am desperately trying to get the revised flight timings(Arrivals and Departures) from Trichy airport. It would be great if some one can post it if you have it with you.

Hi friends,
I do not wish to have a war of words here. I do not have a second opinion that airports in India should develop to the pace of airline industry. Certainly Indian airports are not that great compared to Changi or KLIA or Swarnabhoomi. No doubt about that. But I do not want to belittle my country saying that other places are good.
March 20, 2007 at 7:18 AM
Dear Anbu,
I appreciate your metality that loving your home land. At the same time I appreciate you to speak the truth and stand for the truth, not loving blindly. Most of the times we are betrayed by our own people, especially in Indian Airports in Indian Soil. This has to be changed, whether the Airport getting international standard or not the people in the airport should have the attitudue to treat the people in International Standard. That is the victory of India and Indians, im dreaming of that.

Hi friends,
All of you might know that AI express has started flying between Trichy – Dubai and Trichy – Singapore from 26th. I had been to India to be on the 1st flight to Singapore. I had the opportunity to be the 1st passenger to check-in for the flight. On the inaugural day, the flight left 2 hrs late as incoming aircraft was delayed due to a chain reaction. The inaugural flight to Dubai was delayed to congestion in Chennai due to closure of Colombo airport. As a result, the plane had been delayed in its trip to Dubai and back. For some positives, AI express staff were present everywhere in the airport guiding travellers for check-in, customs etc. I noted that the flight was more than half empty to Singapore. Nevertheless, I noticed that the return flight from Singapore to trichy must have been full. It has been a long wait for people surrounding Trichy to fly direct.
A new terminal is under construction and runway work was also on-going.
Happy flying.
Anbu
March 29, 2007 at 6:00 AM
Mr.Balaaa, Plz note that despite there are two flights from Kuwait to Trichy which takes almost 10 hours to reach Trichy due to the fact that IA has two stopover in Ras Al Khaima/Fujara and Calicutt. To save the timings, we are forced to go to Chennai thru’ Kuwait Airways. If AIE launch a direct service to Trichy from Kuwait, it would be beneficial for all who lives in Kuwait .
March 29, 2007 at 6:10 AM
Dear Basarie,
Your suggestion is fine. Instead of asking the airline, you can fly to Dubai and take Air India Express direct to Trichy via chennai and you can wait in the dubai airport with out paying for Visa, if you wish to do so.
Chris
March 29, 2007 at 12:59 PM
thanks for airindia – express.i was thinking before to chennai from dubai.because from dubai no straight flights to trichy.now its really helpfull that a-i-e has launched a flight from here.keep getting lot of international flights to trichy, bye

Hi All
I visited through Trichy Airport two times recently. I found the officers polite. But I do not have anything in excess of my allowance. Can any body let me know what is the ruling on gold jewellery. How many grams a lady can wear as gold jewellery while going to India. Some people are saying jewelleary (ornaments) are fully exempted no matter how many grams. Is it true.

Dear All,
I am now working & Studying in singapore.
Nice to see a website which explores my home town to the whole world.
April 14, 2007 at 10:32 AM
From the AI website I noticed that Tiruchy-Dubai flight was always overcrowded and full upto 30th of April. I don’t know about the Trichy-Singapore sector. But the return flight from Singapore are well patronised. I request AI authorities to increase the frequency from the present 3 times to 5 times a week.
April 14, 2007 at 10:45 AM
Anyone tell about the Malaysian airlines initial plan to connect Tiruchy with Kulalampur. It is postponed due to non completion to runway expansion ?
April 15, 2007 at 6:58 AM
Hi Narayanan, base on the info of AI office, plans to implemement daily services for Trichy – Dubai, as well as, Trichy – Singapore sectors, once the calibration of the newly extended runway is fully complied with the use of newly installed ILS system.
The demand for the above routes from Trichy has far exceeded than earlier thought, thus, plans to introduce to more destinations, such as, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Bahrain, Doha, Riyadh, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok etc.
Besides AI, several other international carriers has also plans to start operate to&fro Trichy as well.
In due course, Trichy will be witnessing a hub of air activities throughout day and night, which eventually lead to influx of tourist arrivals in the process, ringing the cashier’s counters of restaurants, hotels, shopping etc, continuously.
Well, could only wish that Trichy will have several star hotes, cafes, restaurants, shopping complexes and other basic infrastructures by then.

The first squadron of the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) named Tejas will be deployed down south in Tamil Nadu, when the first batch of the 20 fighter aircrafts are expected to be inducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2009-2010.
The IAF is zeroing on three places Thanjavur , Sulur and Tiruchirapalli for its possible deployment highlighting the new strategic concerns in Indian establishment ’s regarding country’s security, particularly with the growing importance of Indian Ocean region and the maritime security.
Sources in IAF said that Tiruchirapalli could be the place for possible deployment of Tejas, which are expected to replace the MIG-21 aircraft, which have been phased out.
Are they kidding??? When did Trichy become an airbase!!!

Thank you very much for starting the long waiting direct flights from Dammam to Chennai. In this connection I would like to bring your kind attention that most of the people from Tamil Nadu working in eastern province are coming from around 100 K.M.s from the Trichy airport.
As far as there is a new service is available from Dammam to Chennai, this route can be little modified as Dammam – Trichy – Chennai and Chennai – Trichy – Dammam. If you do so this route will be the most profitable route for Air India comparing to any other routes to Gulf.
Moreover, the people around Trichy districts currently using Sri Lankan Airlines (Dammam – Colombo – Trichy). You can easily get the passengers data from the Trichy airport those who are using this route and how many of them from Dammam to arrive at Trichy.
Your immediate action in this regard will helpful for the passengers.
Thank and best regards.

It seems that The Airports Authority fo India (AAI) has requested the TN Seate Govt. to allot about 1000 Acres of land for the next phase of Airport Expansion here in Trichy.
With Trichy proving its potential through overwhelming response to New Air Service to Singapore & Dubai by Air India Express (AIE), the focus has shifted to the next stage of development.
Apart from a further extension of the Runway, construction of a Cargo Complex and Hangers are also planned.
The AAI has given “in principal” clearance for extending the Trichy Aiport’s Runway by another 4,500 feet. The runway was recently extended from 6100 ft to 8000 ft. on an investment of about Rs. 26 Crore.
The Cargo complex is a budgeted project and the sanction for the runway extension would be obtained once the Tamil Nadu Govt. hands over the land. Once the runway is extended to 12,500 ft., Tiruchi would emerge as a major hub for Cargo moment.
The project would hinge on how fast the Govt. acquires land. The State Govt. is epxected to provide the land free of cost.
Air Operators are upbeat over the growth potential for passenger traffic and cargo movement from here in Trichy. They fell that Trichy Airport would emerge as the second major internationalational airport in the State after Chennai.
The new terminal building, sactioned at a cost of Rs. 75 Crore, is coming-up adjacent to the existing one. The terminal building with a capacity to handle about 500 Passengers, would have modern amenities and two Aero-Bridges. The New terminal would be ready by the middle of next year.

Hey guys, do always remember one thing clearly, Chennai is Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu is Chennai, and therefore, whetever social or material introduction in Tamil Nadu, Chennai will be the first choice of implementation, besides, though, the travelling traffic constitutes of about 70% from Villupuram to Ramnad south, based on the market survey.
Hence, the new recent flight introduction between Dammam and Chennai by Air India, needs no mention as well.
Thus, hope in the course of time, maybe, Trichy could be included, perhaps, by means of sharing various flights that are being operated currently at Chennai airport, once apron and terminal works are completed at Trichy airport.
Well, lets see, but personally, I have my reservation.
June 11, 2007 at 6:20 PM
Hope they complete the apron and other associated work before winter. Because most of the airlines start new /additional services during winter.
June 12, 2007 at 2:16 PM
Most of the airlines want to connect Chennai only in the state while they connect cochin, trivandrum and calicut in kerala. I am wondering why airlines want to connect to Chennai and ignore other airports in the state??
Tiger airways is planing to connect Singapore with Chennai only while its planing to connect Cochin, Trivandrum and Calicut in Kerala. It is really pathatic that a samll state like kerala has more connections than tamilnadu.

Trichy corporation has approved Rs 7 crore water theme park in Trichy city. The same project was rejected in the last meeting as the councilors felt that it should be on built on BOT basis and also Anna nagar didnt have enough space for this project.
Personally, I feel disgusting when funds are badly needed for infrastructure works. The drainage work has been happening for years now, new roads are needed which were damaged by the drainage work and flooding couple of years before.

anybody can tell me when an airport is called as a international airport?-interms of no.of international aircraft movements-no of passangers etc. Why I am ask this question becasuse on which basis Madurai airport to be declared as a international airport requests from Madurai Politicians? and why not Trichy
July 4, 2007 at 9:02 AM
I don’t know, what an “International Air Por” really means. I have visited a number of worlds’ international airports. From that I could able to point out what an “International Standard for an International Airport.
1) Well displayed Arrival and Departure information of all flights in a day operates from that airport with gate no, Gate open , last call, On board, late info, in many location of easy visibility.
After coming out of international air port, a passenger should reach his destination within less time spent for taxis, busews or train. For that the International Air Port should be connected by good infrastructure.
2) Number of toilets located in places convenient, neat and tidy with self cleaning system after the user left. nature friendly etc’,
3) More checkin couter for the flights, advance checkin, e checkin , businessw class check in with more outlets in the Departure Hall.
4) Free and efficient Immigration Checks with less difficulty or no dificulty, with unnecessary harasment.
5) Number of Baggage belts, which is working well, maintained well, inspected well for a passenger shall able to spend less time in identifying his own, and transportation.
6) Many number of trolleys which are easy to operate by the passengers, easy movable with less or no effort. These trolleys are to be brought back to the designated points for further use.
7) Baggage Checkin, Baggage claim, Immigration checkin, adquate information are easily available in an orderly manner.
With all these, apart from the landing / take off facilities, an airport will be called an International Airport with International Standard.
Does any airport in INDIA matches this, that will be happy news.

Hi Sam, while welcoming you in this Trichy blog, there is nothing great to be proud of on current developments of “TRICHY”itself. In fact, many newspaper reports, as well as, several associations here, has been grumpling and complaining that Trichy is lagging far behind, in terms of general infrastructure, industrial policy, entertainments etc, when compared to other second rung cities in India, despite, strategically located with immense potential.
On the other side, the curent Tamil Nadu state government, is only fully concentrating on Chennai and it’s surrounding district developments, as though, the people from there, are the only ones voted the current Tamil Nadu state government to power.
Threrefore, until the day when the present Tamil Nadu state government start realise to develop Tamil Nadu as a whole, and at the same time, making Trichy the focal point of government related activities, thus, ensuring a balance Tamil Nadu economy, peace, stability, cohesive and progress throughout.
Another word, making Trichy as Tamil Nadu capital, whilst, Chennai being the Business/Financial centre.

Tiruchy airport aspires to be No2
With more international airlines like Oman Airways, Air Arabia and Malaysian Airlines evincing a keen interest, Tiruchy airport is on its path to becoming a major international airport after Chennai.

With more international airlines like Oman Airways, Air Arabia and Malaysian Airlines evincing a keen interest, Tiruchy airport is on its path to becoming a major international airport after Chennai.
But the airport is also approaching saturation point as infrastructure development has not kept pace with the growth in passenger traffic and aircraft movement.
When aircraft movement increased by 28.3 percent (2,148 aircraft in April 2005-March 2006 to 3,143 aircraft from April 2006-March 2007), passenger traffic increased only by 13.4 percent (from 29,556 in April 2005-March 2006 to 2,14,944 in April 2006-March 2007).
According to Tiruchy Airport Director S Sreekumar, a state-of-the-art new terminal would be ready by June 2008.The Rs 75 crore ‘steel and glass’ structure will have a total floor area of 11,800 sq.ft, three aero-bridges , fully computerised baggage conveyor belt, three elevators. It will have capacity to handle 500 passengers in an hour.
An apron expansion project will also be executed at a cost of Rs 16.63 crore. Once the expansion is completed, seven big aircraft like Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 could be parked as against the present capacity of three. The runway was recently extended from 6,100 feet to 8,000 feet at an outlay of Rs 26 crore.
Meanwhile, the AAI has requested the Tamil Nadu government to allot about 1,000 acres of land for the next phase of expansion.
Air Arabia had already conducted a feasibility study while Malaysian Airlines would be starting services from next year.

Hi Friends,
I am working in Saudi Arabia. Now a days Trich Airport becomes more populer but due to the harashment and unwanted troubles given by the AIRPORT CUSTOMES (such as asking unnecessary Questions 1) What is your Salary, 2) Which company you are working 3) The Jewels you bought or got from some other ways Etc.. Etc.. people particularly fro middle east, they have these expenince from Trich Airport. Also I enquired with my friends they said it is true. Also I have some email which saying the bitter experience of passengers by Trichy Airport Customs & Polices. If any one wants to see those mail please contact me askchandran@yahoo.co.in
I am not intended to compliant but to correct these mistakes.
July 17, 2007 at 3:13 PM
Hi Chandran, thanks for your mail, and it’s pretty clear that you are absolutely jealous of Trichy airport developments, though, you have never experience nor use Trichy airport in that sense. except, hearing from friends.
FYI, I’m a frequent traveller utilising Trichy airport for the past 4 years, mostly travelling to Middle East and SE Asia, and till date, myself, as well as, coleagues, relatives, friends etc, had never before experience any kind of harassment nor hardships as explained by your goodself.
Hence, presume, those friends of yours could be an offender in some form, who may have face certain harassments in the course. Well, believe this goes the same for all airports in India and around the World.
Please note, the immigration and custom officials in Trichy airport, are also on rotational basis between Chennai, Trivandrum, cochi, coimbatore etc. So, do not be narrow minded and pinpointing Trichy airport alone.
However, one thing I would agree about current Trichy airport, is too small and lacking in basic facilities, in comparison to other major International airport in India.
Nevertheless, once the new terminal building is completed, could expect better amenities and facilities, just as any other major International airport in India.
Therefore, be wise enough, and erase the misconceptions of Trichy airport, as well as, stop spreading unnecessary rumours, unless, you are being a bias of some thoughts.
July 18, 2007 at 1:50 PM
I guess harassment by customs official may be true. This is really bad for the development of the Trichy airport. The report says people are trying to avoid Trichy and travelling through Chennai or Trivandrum.
http://www.dinakaran.co.in/epapertamilmurasu/showxml.aspx?id=82403&code=18367
July 18, 2007 at 3:35 PM
Well, if the newspaper report is true, then the Trichy airport director, Mr. Srikumar, should look into this matter seriously, and shall take appropriate actions, in curbing such unwarranted situation, with immediate effect. Otherwise, Trichy airport would lose it’s credibility and confidence from the travelling public, with which, will have a certain bearing in the overall growth of Trichy airport itself.
Personally, I’m surprised, and at the same time, sad to learn through this Dinakaran article, since, had not seen nor experience myself, any kind of harassments with the Trichy airport customs, even with my last recent return trip at Trichy airport from Egypt, despite, carrying my overloaded luggage size of about 50 kg.
Nevertheless, hope to see Trichy airport image be restored soon, and eventually, will have it’s standard in par with the other major international airport in India.

Low-cost airport in Tiruchirapalli
——————————————————————————–
The article says, the low-cost airport will be in addition to the existing one.
Which means 2 airports at trichy?? Personally I wont think so. May be they would be invovling private partnership on the ongoing airport expansion.
After low-cost airlines, it is the turn of no-frill and low-cost airports. In a bid to encourage regional airlines and provide air links to small cities and towns, nearly 25 greenfield or unutilised airport projects have been identified by various states, which will be up for bidding by the private sector.
Planned in tier-II or tier-III cities, the airports would be in addition to the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s (MoCA’s) ambitious modernisation programme for 35 non-metro airports.
A no-frill airport is built at a minimum cost and allows operation of small jets as well as slightly bigger aircraft like Boeing’s B737 or Airbus’ A320. The investment in such an airport could range from Rs 40 crore to Rs 100 crore.
The places identified for the purpose include Hassan, Shimoga, Gulbarga, Bidar, Mysore (all in Karnataka), Shirdi, Jalgaon, Solapur, Akola (all in Maharashtra), Kannur (Kerala), Madurai, Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu), Rupsi (Assam), Ajmer, Mount Abu, Kailashar (Rajasthan), Behala, Cooch Behar, Malda (West Bengal), Jharsuguda (Orissa), Muzaffurpur (Bihar), Kamalpur (Tripura) and Passighat (Arunachal Pradesh).

Hi all,
I am with Mr. Kumar as he expressed the concerns over the decision by tiger airways planning more filghts to kerala. Certainly , it is not a good news for Tamilnadu as it is yet another development flaws. Especially there are more professionals, skilled workers and tamil community group from tamilnadu especially from trichy are stationed at singapore. I really do not guess what could be the driving factor for the tiger airways to choose 3 cities in keral while just chennai only from TAmilnadu.
what could be done to draw the attension of tiger airways!!!!
July 20, 2007 at 5:55 AM
Hi Mani, perhaps, you are misinformed over Tiger Airways plan for Trichy. FYI, Tiger Airways plans to start Trichy services, once the new Terminal building is completed, which is expected around mid-2008, together with Malaysian airlines, as well as, many many more, such as, Air Asia from Malaysia, Thai airways&NOK air from Thailand, Air South Asia from Sri Lanka, RAK airways from UAE, Jazeera airways from Kuwait, to name a few.
Certainly, Trichy International Airport, poised to witness a hub of air activities throughout day and night in the very near future, unless otherwise, vested with heavy political involvements.

Hi Everybody!
Malaysian Civial Aviation authority is quiet keen and they are negotating with Indian carriers to tap the oppurtunity on open sky policy , which they had mutually signed recently. Malaysians are quiet eager to develop the Senai , Airport in Johor Bahru which is just 42 KM away from Singapore’s Budget carrier terminal . Singapore is much worried on this potential threat as because SQ ’s cash cows are said to be this routes. Indian operators can have n number of flights from 18 designated airport in India to Johor Bahru
Further Indian travellers and Singapore Residents could have access on cheaper flights to Chennai & Trichrapalli from Senai ( Johor Bahru ) airport and on return they can use the land way to enter Singapore which would be definitely be a price saver
Hope to have more developments to Trichy Airport Rgs Meiya

Hi Maran,
It’s happy to hear that you are frequent flyer. But you have been protected by God in Indian airports especially in Trichy. I’m flying for the past 15 years but 2 times i come across the bitter experince its not the airport. It’s the person who is working there. However its a total diaseter for the airport ,trichy and india. 15years of flying still our employees in the airport did not come to Insternational Standard Attidude, like other international ariports.

To-day I travelled in the Indian IC 590 flight from Tiruchi – Chennai. I could see there are increasing number of passengers every time in Indian, Srilankan Airlines and Mihin Lanka Airlines. Tiruchi Airport is truly developing in terms of passengers, the number of flight operators etc., I am using Tiruchi Aiport for the past 7 years without problems. The last two years of progress, something unimaginable with regard to the passengers traffic and number of flight operators. Gone are the days that Tiruchi Airport is no more the sleepy airport. Once the terminal building works completed, more than 10 airline operators are coming to start their operations from Tiruchi. An average, there are 5000 passengers every week travelling from Tiruchi Airport. Soon it will reach every day 1000 passengers from and to Tiruchi.
July 23, 2007 at 2:47 PM
Hi Chris, thanks and FYI, I’ve been flying for the past 25 years around the World, and still doing so for my business. I’ve used all the major airports, as well as, most other smaller airports in India ever since.
Hence, to be honest and to my experience, the Indian airport employees and personnel, have generally similar attitudes, and given an opportunity, they would take advantage to the extent of undue harassment, unless you could talk your way out, and or, of certain calibre in bringing about a certain attention of respect.
Thus, in my view, as well as, my past experience, the worst harassment airport I had was in Kolkatta airport, after returning from Bangkok, about 20 years ago. The next worst airport was Chennai, followed by Delhi and finally ending with Mumbai.
Therefore, as far as I am concern, all major International airport in India had similar culture and mentality, before India start open up to the World.
Hence, as for Trichy airport, has now better managed and improved its services over the years, then it was before about 5 years ago, when I took the first International flight out from here, with which, reminded me of Kolkatta and Chennai airport bitter experiences.
Nevertheless, given the time, opportunity and experiences, I’m sure Trichy airport credibility will be in par with other major International airport in India.

Attached herewith, a Silkair message from Singapore, for your general info.
Dear Mr Maran
Thank you for your email.
We currently do not have any plans to operate to Trichy. We will monitor performance on our Coimbatore services and if demand is strong, we could look into Trichy as well.
Best regards,
shareen.
July 24, 2007 at 12:49 PM
Good Mr.Maran for taking effort in getting the message from Silk Air but it is a bad news for Trichians since most of us are looking for at least one Regular Airlines to operate to Trichy to have comfortable travelling. Most of them travelled in AIE are not happy on the service extended by AIE.
Let us hope at least malaysian Airlines operate direct flight to Trichy.

I dont know how demand will be more from Coimbatore, when most of the people travelling are from central and sourthern districts of the state, have to travel to coimbatore which is in western corner of the state.

According to Patel, Trichy is one amont the non-metro airports which is has begun doing well.
Counting the airports in Amritsar, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Trichy, Guwahati and Nagpur as frontrunners among the non-metro Indian airports that have begun doing well, Patel said the country had a potential for a thousand airports.

The launch of a new fleet of aircraft in New Delhi Saturday will mark a new phase in the booming aviation sector in India, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said.
Though the scheduled launch at the hands of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would comprise only five aircraft, it would mean inauguration of the new phase consisting of 111 aircraft over the next three years, Patel told reporters here Friday.
The merger of Air India and Indian (Airlines) – which is almost through with only a few technicalities remaining – into National Aviation Company with the brand name of Air India is in keeping with the new take off though it was long overdue.
Patel termed the scheduled inauguration of a non-stop Mumbai-New York Air India flight Aug 1 a new feather in the cap of the Indian aviation industry that is rapidly expanding to cover second and third tier cities.
Counting the airports in Amritsar, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Trichy, Guwahati and Nagpur as frontrunners among the non-metro Indian airports that have begun doing well, Patel said the country had a potential for a thousand airports.
The minister also referred to the upcoming plan to launch regional airlines in the country and the move to draft dedicated aircraft into postal services to further bolster their speed.
Patel informed the reporters that the leading aviation training institute CAE of Canada, which developed the aviation academy in Rae Bareli, had been assigned the task of setting up the proposed aviation academy in Gondia – the minister’s home town in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region.

Since Tiruchy City is situated at the centre of Tamil nadu and connected with entire tamil nadu and adjacent states by rail and road, it is prime necessary to fly in & out Trichy airport with more flights. Airport authority may think it over to promote this airport as international airport. Doing so may promote not only passenger trafic, but the tourism.

kingfisher is likely to withdraw its service to trichy due to poor response.

Kingfisher is likely to withdraw all its services to coimbatore due to poor response.
September 9, 2007 at 8:36 AM
Its bad that Trichy wont have connection to Bangalore. Kingfisher has always been expensive.
September 9, 2007 at 8:40 AM
I guess Indian too will withdraw the thrice weekly service to Chennai due to poor repsonse.

May be Kingfisher might use AirDeccan in the Bangalore route. With re-structure, Kingfisher will be flying metros and AirDeccan concentrating Tier II cities.

Air lanka is going to quit the service frm next month ,,,,

To help Tourism, you need serious tourism companies in Trichy. There is none at national or international standards. You need serious ground transport. Chennai being a big mess will help Trichy quite a bit, but the planning needs to be done by Trichy corporation with a long term vision. Let’s face it, Trichy is not all that great a tourist destination. It is largely agricultural and religious.. not many tourists really care.
To improve tourism economy, Trichy should focus on becoming what Bangalore once was. – a beautiful garden city. The city should be made attractive and most of all convenient to spend a couple of nights in.
Train service is good – a major advantage Trichy has over Chennai is that availability of Trains round the clock. Chennai becomes empty after Rockfort express leaves. But trains keep stopping in Trichy throughout the night. People should capitalize on that.
If airport hub is all that is needed, there are very few simple things that need to be done by the corporation. Airport hubs become popular mainly because of convenience and comfort.
- no-frills, courteous taxi service between points of transport
- good, healthy food in the city
- hotels with clean – i mean really clean upto international standards – rooms. I have yet to find a hotel in Chennai that is reasonably priced, but as clean as my own house in Trichy
- bus-station and the surrouding area are seriously ugly, unclean and congested
I will stop here for the moment..

It’s just pointless to be posting the problems in here….the city hasn’t changed much ever since i first understood day and night 28yrs ago!
Resisting change and growth instigated by politicians appear to be the order of day not just in trichy but all over the country. The longer people live in poverty the better it is for politicians – a direct component of the communist survival in india.
Of all the weaknesses highlighted by LP, improving hygiene perhaps the most important element for attracting tourism will NEVER happen in india. People are just so filthy that they are fit to be called uncivilized.
So instead of discussing Airport terminals we ought to emphasis on a “shower and shave” campaign….

I don’t think srilankan airlines totally withdrawn its services completely, i think that they cut short the frequenices to 5 days per week and total services to Colombo may be 12services per week including Mihin Lanka’s services
September 10, 2007 at 2:28 PM
Hi guys, please note, suspect Coimbatoreans are back at work again in attacking Tiruchians. Thus, do not care about their malicious messages being posted in this particular blog.
FYI, Sri Lankan airlines patronage to&fro Trichy has been overwhelming, and hence, planned for 2 daily flights, after the introduction of night ops, which is expected by year end or earlier.
Mihin Lanka’s operations to&fro Trichy has been extremely overwhelming too. Also, planned for 2 daily flights after procuring additional aircrafts.
Furthermore, AIE will be expanding their operations into full scale, after the completion of Terminal building, and at the same time, making Trichy as their hub of domestic&International operations in the south.
In additions, may expect few other international airlines namely, Air Arabia and Oman Airways, to start their operations at Trichy shortly.
On the domestic front, Kingfisher and Air Deccan are doing generally fine, and hence, no reason to scale back their services, as well as, no such announcement being made from them.
In fact, may expect few domestic airlines to announce their services to&fro Trichy shortly.
In conclusion,Trichy airport is witnessing a boom, rather than being doomed.

Hi,
I would like to share my experience with all of you about Indian.
All the Airbus available with Indian is old [more than 20 years] and regularly facing the technical snag problem. I have traveled from Chennai to Tiruchy 4 times in Indian and all the time it was late from 1 hour to 4 hour. I won’t consider 1 hour delay by Indian as delay and that will be considered as right time by them. Interestingly on 20th Jan Indian [Kuwait flight] boarded all the passengers and just like that the aircraft was waiting 1 hour without take-off stating that no place in Airport. This was the most ridiculous one. And one more instance while returning from tiruchy, the flight was delay by one hour and there was no regret announcement for the delay in flight. Pilot is telling that it is not his duty. On June10th 2007, the aircraft to chennai [from kuwait one] got overflown tiruchy due to technical reason. Tiruchy Indian Manager was telling us this type of problem never happen till now. but I read last week on newspaper that sharjah-tiruchy flight overflown tiruchy due to pilot’s flying time was over [it was delay once again on technical snag]. Practically, I can say may be Indian on right time 4, 5 times in a month. For your info, the full fare on Indian is Rs.4700/- for economy.
Please be noted that a person can easily reach chennai from tiruchy by road or rail in 5 – 6 hours time. but if I planned to travel by air, I can’t make sure that I can reach in time by paying a hefty money. This was the main reason for the failure of chennai – tiruchy route. As you aware for air travel the person is to reach 1 hour before departure and 1 hour flying time and 1 hour in chennai to collect the luggage [some time]. Totally this operation requires around 4 hours and once again no guarantee to reach chennai. but by road/rail you can reach in 6 hours.
Regarding Kingfisher service to Bangalore. They are operating at 2.45 PM and will reach Bangalore at 3.45 PM. If a person travel from tiruchy to bangalore by kingfisher he looses his half day time as well no use for reaching in the evening since he can start the work in next day only. If he travel by road/rail he can reach very comfort by 8 – 9 hours in night without loosing the valuable day time.
Moreover, all the domestic routes are operated in the non-peak hours or on inconvenient departure timings.
Hence, for tiruchy only the international route will be success and the domestic route will be failure only. For madurai, domestic will work fantastic since by road / rail needs minimum 10 hour and by flying they can save the time.
September 10, 2007 at 5:10 PM
I dont understand why Srilankan would withdraw services to Trichy which is one of its profitable route.Even after introduction of Mihin Lanka, Srilankan is getting good response though it is impacted to some extend.
Kingfisher might allow Airdeccan to operate on the Bangalore route, while it concentrating on the denser route. I think it will be good as Airdeccan prices are lesser than Kingfisher. This will be same between AIE and Indian due to merger. With AIE increasing its services to Chennai, Indian might scale down it services.
I dont agree that Domestic route is a failure. Of the 12000-15000 seats per month, 8000-10000 is filled which I think is not bad.But it can improve if Trichy has better connectivity. On ther hand Madurai has 50000 seats per month. With Indian flights being delayed for most of the time people are forced to take alternate commute. If Trichy gets better timings, then domestic route will become more popular.
September 11, 2007 at 4:02 AM
Raj brings up a good point. There is absolultely no point in flying between Trichy and Chennai except for luxury. Chennai airport is way out of the city and it takes more than an hour by taxi to get from the airport to points of business. Pallavan/Vaigai are super convenient. If only they are upgraded to something like the Shatabti series, there will be no competitiion from air in this route.
As it stands today, Madurai has a better chance of becoming a more successful domestic hub. There is not a city south of Madurai that is worth mentioning in any discussion related to airports and so Madurai gets jurisdiction of entire southern TN. People along the train route between Nagappattinam and Coimbatore, including those in Trichy have a better airort in Coimbatore. Why bother with Trichy?
If Trichy wants to get 50K seats or more like Madurai, it had better get its act together. Keep the airport, bus station and train station closely connected, run passenger trains around departure and arrival timings of the planes, extend a train route all the way to the airport and make things move fast inside the airport. Keep the city clean. Again, convenience and comfort in getting to and from the airport are important. To fix things in smaller cities like Trichy is simpler than to fix the same issues with bigger cities like Madurai or Chennai.
It takes a hell of a lot of time to go from Trichy to Bangalore by train – same issue with traveling between Trichy to Cochin or Mangalore or Trivandram. It is just not worth your time to travel in train between Trichy and some selected cities. So, Air Deccan flight to Bangalore has a good chance of success if it has great timings. And that one flight is pretty much all that Trichy folks need to travel anywhere in the world by air. With the IT park being set up near the airport, there are really good chances of profit in this route. If it were me, I wouldn’t bother with flights to Chennai. I would stick to flights to Bangalore, mid-east, Singapore and if things improve, extend flights to the island nations in the Indian Ocean.
Trichy and its citizens need a role-model city to look up to and to imitate. No.. not Chennai or Bangalore, but something like Singapore.
Chennai sucks for connections – no hope there. People in the service businesses in Chennai are unbelievably discourteous, rude, arrogant and models of everything that is worst about Tamilnadu. It will take a long time for Chennai and Chennai businesses to fix themselves. There is a very good chance for Coimbatore and a very remote chance for Trichy to become really good hubs by leap-frogging. Don’t know much about Madurai.
September 11, 2007 at 4:56 AM
Trichy need to be connected to Mumbai and Delhi through Chennai /Bangalore.
This way people from metros can reach trichy without changing flights at Bangalore or Chennai.
I have travelled atlest 20 times and all the time i have to either touch Chennai /Bangalore (and pay additional taxes)
Timings have to be improved for domestic flights to help people visiting trichy to enjoy air travel
Trains from / to trichy are good but flight servies are mandatory and can be be neglected

AIE starts 6 additional flights to Singapore and to add more destinations including Abu Dhabi
——————————————————————————–
Air India Express has launched six additional flights a week to Singapore from Tiruchi.
The budget airline is already operating three flights a week each in the Tiruchi-Singapore and Tiruchi-Dubai sectors.
Tiruchi Airport Director S. Sreekumar flagged off the first additional Singapore-Tiruchi-Chennai-Singapore flight here on Monday.
With this, the total number of Air India Express flights in the Tiruchi-Singapore sector will go up to nine. While three flights are being added to Singapore with the deployment of another Boeing 737-800, the existing Singapore-Tiruchi flights will be operated back to Singapore on three other week days.
With the additional flights, Tiruchi will boast of air services to Singapore six days a week, except Sunday.
The additional flights will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (two flights to Singapore from here on these days). The Singapore-Tiruchi-Chennai-Singapore flight will reach Tiruchi at 11.20 a.m. and leave for Singapore at 12.20 p.m. . The Singapore-Tiruchi flights, which are being extended back to Singapore, will operate to the same timings on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The Dubai-Tiruchi-Chennai-Singapore night flights will continue to operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The flights can carry a maximum of 165 passengers with a load penalty.
Air India’s district sales manager S. Kannan said the airline might operate more international destinations, including Abu Dhabi, from Tiruchi, once the airport’s infrastructure was strengthened. Airport sources said the new apron was likely to be commissioned soon.

Simply fantastic, Well, could we say, this is the start of many international flight operations by the various airlines at Trichy airport in due course?
Also, does anyone have news on the current proposed extension of runway to 12,500 ft?
Since, hearing on Singapore Airlines plan to operate the most lucrative Singapore-Trichy-Dubai route, using bigger aircraft such as Airbus 330/340/350 and Boeing 777, once completion of runway to 12,500 ft.
Anyway, for now, let us cheers to the above.

Does anyone have news on the latest Trichy airport runway expansion to 12,500 ft ????????, and or 1000 acres proposed land acquisition???????? Hope, not gone into thin air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IA withdrawn two weekly flights from Kuwait to Trichy via calicut. IA services is not attractive due to two stoppings in RasA-Khaima & Calicut. Hence, I would request AIE to start direct serivices to Trichy from Kuwait which will eventully helpful for all Tiruchian and sourounding areas.
October 28, 2007 at 2:55 PM
AIE is planing to connect Kuwait and hope Trichy will be connected to Kuwait.

Tiruchi Airport new terminal building construction is very fast implemented as I could see developments in the construction of the site every week and in every stage. I hope that the construction work would be completed on time i.e. March 2008. Anyhow, the connectivity to Bangalore from Tiruchi is stopped. Could anyone write to other airlines like Tiger Airways, Paramount Airways for starting flight operations from Tiriuchi – Bangalore.
November 2, 2007 at 5:40 AM
Lets hope the construction is completed by March 2008 and more services start.I guess it will be tough to convince air operators to start Bangalore flight as the cancellation by Kingfisher would have send bad message to all other operators.Unless Trichy industry fully supports the air operators we cant see many flights to other major cities. This will be really bad for the growth of Trichy.
November 5, 2007 at 5:43 AM
Yes Kumar. It was really a bad move by Kingfisher to start the operation without a proper study. They started the operation when there was no IT companies in Trichy. And now the IT park is set to be developed and they stopped the flights. The connectivity to Bangalore will come up as soon as the software giants(CTS,Sutherland and Wipro) firm up their feet in Trichy.
Lets not forget, Kingfisher did not mention that they will never come again. They might have stopped the service due to the low counts of passenger. May be they will start again, after the new terminal is ready. Lets cee boss.
November 6, 2007 at 7:34 AM
anyway the correct timings of flights will be more important.noon flights can be used only by tourists and non officials.
November 8, 2007 at 8:14 AM
Its very surprizing that cities like Trichy which have very good educational institutions and infrastructure have gone un-noticed by many private IT players. Its high time Bangalore and Delhi are given some time to settle down in terms of infrastructure before more & more investment and people.
Expecting more articles like this.

Thats a very bad news, we are slowly loosing on the international front to CBE. Already CBE has 4 international airlines operating and dinamalar states that Jet airways will also be operating soon from there.
Also there was a news on linking MDU and CBE, it said that pvt airlines were studying the possibility of linking both cities. If this happens there is all probability that passengers from southern districts may prefer CBE.
November 13, 2007 at 11:01 AM
Hi Trichy guy,
Dont be sad. Thiruchi will get its own share. Where u get the news about Jet airways coimbatore operation?.
November 13, 2007 at 2:38 PM
Right, Trichy will have its own share and airlines cannot ignore Trichy. With Apron expansion work completed and second Taxiway created, hope DGCA gives permission to arilines to start more services from Trichy.
November 14, 2007 at 5:36 AM
Dear all,
Yesterday I visited Trichy Airport and happy to note that the works are in full swing and expected to completed on time.
November 14, 2007 at 6:17 AM
Yesterday in the newspapers, there was a news item that by May 2008 the works on new terminal building would be completed. The Airport Authority requested for new airline operators to commence domestic flight services from Tiruchi as the airport can park now six flights with one more taxi way to reach the apron. Tiruchi Airport called for starting cargo services from airline operators as the textile industries and other agro-based products could be well utilised the services. There would be chilling plant also be established for this purpose. Will anyone tell about the potential for starting cargo services and more domestic flights from Tiruchi to connect major cities in India
November 14, 2007 at 6:34 AM
Local sources in Trichy circle, indicated that the Kingfisher is planning to re-start and re-route sometime early next year, by connecting Bangalore, either via Madurai or Coimbatore.
As for cargo services, Sri Lankan Airlines is planning to introduce dedicated cargo freight services world-wide from Trichy as well.
November 14, 2007 at 6:41 AM
It doesnt make sense to connect Bangalore via Madurai or Coimbatore.
With Apron work fully completed and second taxiway link created, hope DGCA gives permission to start more international services and domestic carries come forward to start new services.
November 14, 2007 at 8:44 AM
I feel if we get connection to Bangalore it would be provided by Air Deccan. As far as i understand from news sources the strategy of Kingfisher is to operate between Metro’s and big cities, and Deccan would link those cities to tier II and III cities.
November 14, 2007 at 9:45 AM
This is the update for Trichy Airport,

Dear Friends,
The public should be well informed about the light services, and the fares should be affordable by the middle class family. Still flying seems to be unaffordable for most of the families in Trichy surroundings. But for CBE, its factories, and business people make full use of the airports.
The load factor between CBE to Mumbai, Delhi is excellant, and we will never have it from Trichy. Making trichy as a favorite international destination is an important task, and if the international airlines provide a stop at Trichy, it will be highly utilised such as the sectors.
Middle East->Trichy->Chennai
Middle East->Trichy->Hyderabad
Middle East->Trichy->Calcutta
Malaysia/Sing-> Trichy->Chennai
Malaysia/Sing->Trichy->Kerala

Is the TRICHY Airport now losing International Connections to CBE ?
The new terminal of Trichy looks well ….
Is the TRICHY airport depend on Madurai and Madurai-bounded southern districts for its International passengers ?
If so..How can it shine when MADURAI getting its International status ?
Then and there-There’s a talk that Madurai is going to be a full-swing International airport…
As you said – MADURAI is getting good status in domestic-side.

Hi, I am planning to stay in Trichy for a day, but i found that no hotels are allowing pets and i enquired all leading hotels like sangam, femina and many others. Do u know if there is a hotel in trichy which is pet friendly. i have already booked hotels in places like madurai, and kariakal which allows pets and i wanted to go to few temples around trichy. b’coz of this reason, i would either have to drop the idea of going to trichy or ultimately plan to leave my dog back at chennai
December 25, 2007 at 5:59 AM
It’s gonna be very difficult to find a hotel that can accommodate pets in trichy Sreedhar. “Pet friendliness” is almost non-existant in the indian hospitality industry-you might want to give “Tamilnadu tourism hotel” near the Central bus terminus a shot.
Can’t promise if your dog would be taken care of-some generous tipping might do the trick though. Btw, i must warn you that this hotel is unfit for a longer stay…you will just have to sail through the day!
December 26, 2007 at 3:09 AM
can i know the name of trichy airport..??? as chennai airport has the name ANNA TERMINAL….!!!!
December 26, 2007 at 6:33 AM
It has been proposed as TRICHY KALAIGNAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT,I think, since, Chennai has ANNA ARIVALAIYAM, whilst, Trichy has KALAIGNAR ARIVALAIYAM, under construction.
Who knows, current Tamil Nadu government, may even go to the extend of making Chennai as Business/Financial Centre, whilst, Trichy being the capital of Tamil Nadu State.
Well only TIME will tell the truth.
December 28, 2007 at 11:19 AM
maran, i dont think that happening. Do you know that DMK govt is planning to build a new secretariate in Chennai. I recently saw the models of the buildings in dinamalar. So Chennai will remain the business as well as administrative capital of TN.
January 3, 2008 at 1:20 AM
What is wrong in Trichy Air port to remian as TRICHY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT? What is wrong in using TRICHIRAPPALLI name which is a historical place known to the world? So many universities and Airports are named after the political leaders, which is always confusing. If Govt changes, these names will be changed to suit to their leaders!!!!. Down with this unique, useless idea of naming the important places, public utilities after their leaders.!!!You can’t find this practice in any other country in this world!!!!.
When we are going to learn this, God only knows!!!
January 3, 2008 at 7:21 AM
I fully agree with what was expressed by Mr.Sundaresan. Already there are so many politicians and communities are vying with each other to name the public places with their leaders. There would be communal clash also when we try to name after political leaders/caste leaders.
When it is announced as Tiruchirappalli International Airport in the flight, it really wonderful to hear about Tiruchirappalli.
God only knows what will be the title for Tiruchirappalli airport!!!
January 3, 2008 at 1:30 PM
Hi
frnds its correct AAi must choose a modern name for TRZ airport becoz the Terminal Building is like a World Class modern building . so plz choose a modern name for Trichy airport.
if they keep politicians name it s not nice
leave it as (Trichyrappalli Int Airport)
or keep it as Anna International Airport TERMINAL 2
January 3, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Adhil, Anna is also a politicians name and adding to it Chennai international airport already has his name. I dont think the need for any change in the name and Tiruchirapalli international airport is fine.
Guys i came across the design of new Madurai airport terminal somewhere in the internet, it looks more modern, big and sophisticated. Why didnt AAI plan in such scale for Trichy
.
January 3, 2008 at 3:54 PM
No official confirmation on Madurai airport terminal design from AAI yet, but already artist impression drawings of Madurai airport has been circulating in the net, with which, personally, feel it’s a bogey, unless otherwise.
Though, initial Madurai airport terminal has been designed bigger floor area than Trichy, think this could be the final layout, wherelse, Trichy airport terminal has been designed for future expansion in mind.
Regarding grandeur and sophistification of upcoming terminal in Trichy, think could be equal or better than Madurai, as seen in the net, since, Trichy airport is being officialy proclaimed as truly INTERNATIONAL.
To side track, US consultants hired by AAI in 2005, has already submitted the report, claiming Trichy airport is very well positioned, between Chennai and Trivandrum airports, to serve the travelling public in the central regions of Tamil Nadu state, and hence, the idea of expansion and upgrading was mooted thereafter.
Therefore, the idea of Madurai airport development in par or better than Trichy airport, has raised more questions than answers.

Hi Everyone,
To-day, I visited Tiruchi Airport and the new terminal building construction. The approach road and landscaping work excellently done by airport authorities. You can get a very good glimpse of Tiruchi Airport new terminal building. As a Tiruchian, we should all proud of the new terminal building established here. I think in the next two to three months all works would be completed and ready for operation.

Opening of terminal building is not going to help the Govt as it has more important issues to handle for the next elections.
Since most of the work is completed,AAI will start operations in few months and gradually complete the terminal.AAI had done the same for Trivandrum airpot. Also the recently opened GMR airport at Hyderabad is yet to finish the terminal work.

Trichy airport expansion in six months
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Trichy April 3, 2008
The Rs 75 crore modernisation of the Trichy airport is likely to be completed within the next 6 months
For the major components like installation of two aero bridges(order awarded to an Indonesian Firm), common user terminal equipment installation with which different airlines can operate at a given time their services, construction of public concourse, commercially implanted lounge, the integrated building maintenance system which can electronically controlled and monitor the electrical system and air-conditioning equipments etc were on place and necessary contracts and global tenders have all been finalised / orders released.
The new terminal building would also host medical inspection room as to be handled by a Trichy based corporate hospital. The non directional beacon now installed at a distance of 3 kilometers from the airport will also be shifted within the campus so that the homing device for aircraft handling will be in place at the relocated operational area.
The AAI had also decided to install the control tower at a suitable site inside the operational area so that the control operations were possible with 360 degrees view direction.

I really dont understand what the hell is AAI doing. They started construction on this 70 crore terminal in June 2006 and they need until March 2009 to complete. That is solidly 2 years and 9 months.
The 2,500 crore Hyderabad airport construction was started in April 2005 and they completed it in March 2008. In 3 yrs the GMR group made a world class airport ready, and our AAI need 2 yrs 9 months for 70 crore terminal.
April 7, 2008 at 2:00 AM
This is the difference between the Govt and the private participation. The TN govt requires only Govt participation which are in slow process and not encouraging pvt participation inline with the left policies. It is crystal fact that the all the GOVT handled projects are facing the untold delay causing the public the financial burden. How long a Trichian public wait for a worthy airport & other infrastructure in their town? Except some public sector in INDIA ,all other Govt sectors are experience in delays in which the official themselves not knowing the root cause.
1) Lethargic way of working
2) Poor Planning and poor handling of the situation
3) The officials are not working as a team
4) Less utilization of local talents as engineering knowledge.
5) lack of interations among themselves and inefficiently controlled by the political stalwarts.
6) Waiting for the next elections by the Polictical parties.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru has assured residents of J.K. Nagar and nearby colonies that all efforts would be made to ensure that the proposed land acquisition for the Tiruchi airport did not cause heavy displacement of people.
Mr. Nehru, who represents the Tiruchi-II Assembly constituency, also said they would be taken into confidence while finalising acquisition and instructed the officials to convene a tripartite meeting of the aggrieved residents, Airports Authority of India and the district administration to discuss the mater. The Minister visited J.K. Nagar on Saturday and interacted with residents of the colonies whose lands could be taken over for the project.
Residents of nearly a dozen colonies are opposing the acquisition of a large area on the western and front side of the airport. They were also opposing the move to provide a diversion to the Tiruchi-Pudukottai National Highway, which ran close to the airport runway. The Airports Authority of India has proposed to extend the runway to 12,500 feet from 8,000 feet, which would require the diversion of the highway and the acquisition of a large area of land. Residents of J.K. Nagar, Lourdu Nagar, Bharathi Nagar, Rajaganapathy Nagar, RVS Nagar and RS Puram fear that their houses will be acquired. They claim that nearly 4,000 houses could face demolition if the land in front of the airport is acquired. A fresh survey taken up the Revenue Divisional Officer and the Airport officials early this week evoked a panic reaction from the residents.
Mr. Nehru, accompanied by Collector T. Soundiah and District Revenue Officer A. Nambirajan, interacted with members of the J.K. Nagar Residents Welfare Association which is spearheading a campaign against the acquisition. Association president M. Rajagopal and other residents pleaded with the Minister to avoid acquisition of their houses.
The Minister told the residents that efforts would be made to acquire lands on the eastern side, behind the airport, to ensure that there was minimum displacement on the west. Even in case of some displacement, adequate compensation and alterative house sites would be provided to families whose lands are to be taken over, he said. Tiruverambur MLA K.N. Sekaran and Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan were present.
April 7, 2008 at 6:07 AM
Tiruchy guy, AAI might take until March 2009 to entirely finish the completion. My point is AAI will start partial operations(they might start either departure or arrival from the new terminal) when major work is expected to be completed in few months and gradually complete the entire construction of the terminal. This is what AAI did for Trivandrum or in case of Calicut airport.Even the newly opened Rs 2500 cr GMR airport is not 100% completed.

The Trichy airport director says the works would be completed in 6 months. Also the report says IT companies want the airport work to be expedited.

April 26, 2008 at 6:22 AM

Yes,lets hope the terminal is inagurated on the Nov 17.With Airlines bleeding,we cant expect more services from the Indian Carriers atleast for now.But the Indian authorities should give clearence without delay to international airlines which are interested to start the services from Trichy.
We will have to wait and see what happend after the new terminal becomes operational.

Based on dinamalar news important people from Delhi and Chennai will take part in the inaguration

Pls trichy will be International airport ?
November 19, 2008 at 2:25 AM
trichy airport will not become leading international airport if the airport authority keeps on postponing new terminal inauguration due to silly reasons. if they really have interest, it should be done ontime. i think its delayed more than a year.
November 26, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Does anyone know the date of new terminal inauguration?
December 2, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Mr. Sreekumar (Airport Manager) when the new terminal inauguration let’s get clear details also, when the direct flight start service from trichy to gulf countries.
December 23, 2008 at 6:58 AM
Is there any update when the new terminal will be inagurated?
December 23, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Long time back i said AAI would delay the project and inaugurate it closer to election time and no one believed me. Everyone were telling ít will open in Aug or Sept 2008.
Election date would most probably be announced in March 2009, so they would inagurate just in time before the election code of conduct comes into place. So we could see inauguration in late Jan or early Feb 2009.
December 24, 2008 at 6:21 AM
New terminal inaguration will take place if the airport named as Kalaigner otherwise it would be deferred to Mid June 2009. This is the conspiracy concluded by Airport Director as well as State Government. Trichy MP L.Ganesan is waste & the Ministers like: A.Raaja, Palanimanikkam & Ragupathy are also waste. They never do anything about the betterment of Trichy airports instead they are mobilize their income from various sources.
December 25, 2008 at 7:21 AM
Yeah……………………..TRICHY KALAINGAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT????????????????????????????? Sounds good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 25, 2008 at 8:07 AM
Since Kalaigner belongs to Cholan dynasty, it is proper to name Trichy Airport as KALIGNER AIRPORT due to the fact that Chennai International/Domestic Aiports had already named as Anna & Kamarajar respectively. As Kaligner has been rendering his social services to entire Tamil Communities all over the World, we have to respect & honour him by way of giving his name to Trichy Internatinal Airport. Domestic Airport can be named as MGR or Moopanar. If all supports this naming strategy, certainly all internatinoal flights will be connected to Trichy especially those tamils residing in Gulf & Far Eastern Countries.
December 31, 2008 at 10:04 AM
Dear Kutthus,
Your suggestion is excellent. We have to respect Mr. Kalaingnar.
Thanks.

February 11, 2009 at 9:42 AM

The Rs.80-crore, state-of-the-art integrated terminal will be declared open at the Tiruchi Airport on Saturday, giving a big push to civil aviation infrastructure in the central region.
Tiruchi is one of the non-metro airports taken up for expansion by the Centre and the new terminal building will make for a world class airport.
Online edition of India’s National Newspaper
Wednesday, Feb 18, 2009
The steel and glass structure, built close to the terminal, can handle about 400 passengers at a time.
The new terminal would have two aerobridges with glass tunnels , three escalators and five lifts within four months. Provision has been made for a third aerobridge.
With seven aircraft parking bays, it would become functional once additional manpower was posted to the Central Industrial Security Force and after the commissioning of the Common User Terminal Equipment which entails signing of agreements by air operators.
The ground-plus-one building will have a floor space of 11,800 square metres.
The ground floor will feature a landscaped and open central concourse, check-in area, two security holds, restaurants, duty-free shops, VIP lounges, customs and immigration desks.
A city-side canopy, lawns and about 300 car parking bays make the façade of the terminal constructed on an elevated plane to give it better visibility from the Tiruchi-Pudukottai highway.
Special construction material such as space frame and zip roofs have been used. The terminal will be energy efficient and include a centralised ‘building management system’ for controlling amenities such as air-conditioning and lighting. It will also have a power sub-station.

Trichy airport to open new terminal building on Feb 22
Tiruchiraplli, Feb 17 : The new terminal building at the international airport in Tiruchirapalli would be inaugurated on Febrary 22, Airport Authority of India (AAI) sources said.
New building, a two storey complex, with 11,700 square metres with full air-condition comforts was designed to handle 400 passengers, the AAI sources told PTI.
New terminal consisted of the spacious public concourse to accommodate 150 passengers, an executive lounge to accommodate passengers and a reserved lounge for VVIPs.
The original estimate was about Rs 75 crore when the project commenced two years back, with the cost escalation and added amenities it could end up at Rs 78 to Rs 80 crore, sources said.
Basic structure with air conditions, stand by generators of 2,000 KV capacity, basic amenities for passengers and service providers were all very much in place and ‘corrossel’ type conveyor belt, imported from Portugal, for luggage would soon get installed at the terminal.
Provisions for three units of aero-bridges had already been made and within six months two aero-bridges (imported from Indonesia) would get installed. Currently the airport was handling ten flights per day (1,500 passengers) in domestic and international sector and the existing terminal building was to be converted into a cargo terminal, for which a blue print had already been prepared.
Tiruchirappalli airport, one of the oldest airports in South India, was even used by the erstwhile Tata airways. R D Tata, the doyen and pioneer of Indian civil aviation had piolated an aircraft to Colombo from here, carrying Christmas mails in 1938.

Chidambaram’s assurance to landowners
Tiruchirappalli, Feb 21: Union home minister P Chidambaram today assured people whose land is to be acquired for expansion of the airport here that they need not harbour any worries as the government has accorded top priority to their rehabilitation.
“People whose land is to be acquired for the airport expansion need not worry, as we give importance to rehabilitation as a policy,” he said, inaugurating the Rs 75-Crore New Integrated terminal building at the airport.
A total of 530 acres is to be acquired for expansion of the runway from 8,000 feet to 10,000 feet in the first phase and to 12,000 feet in the second phase.
Referring to the economy,he said people should compare the nine per cent economic growth achieved by the UPA government in the last five years, to 5.8 per cent in the six year BJP rule. The service sector, small and medium industries, infrastructure facility providers and farmers, who produced an additional one crore tonnes of agricultural produce, played a major role in helping achieve this, he said.
“When there is negative growth or poor growth in even developed countries, India was able to achieve nine per cent growth. The same growth is possible in 2009-10 if people elect the Congress again” he added. – Agencies

Presently, almost 30 flights are operating to Kerala sector from Kuwait per week, which is as follows:-
COCHIN: 16 fligths
AIE: 3 SAT/TUE/THU
JET: 5 SAT/SUN/WED/THU/FRI
JAZ: 3 SUN/WED/FRI
KAC: 5 THU/FRI/WED/TUE/SUN
KOZHIKOE: 9 Flight per week
AIE:7 MON/FRI/WED/SAT/TUE/THU/SUN
IA :2 SUN/WED
TRIVANDRUM: 5 Flights per week
AIE: 1 SUN
KAC: 4 MON/SAT/WED/FRI,
Whereas in Tamiladu, all flights are going to Chennai only as follows:-
KAC: FRI,SUN.TUE,WED 4 Flights
IA : THU,WED,SUN 3 Flights
Abbreviation: KAC-Kuwait Airways, IA-Indian Airlines, AIE-Air India Express, Jazeera
If you look above, most of the airlines including AirIndia are concentrating only Kerala sector and have connectivity in all three Aiports (Trivandrum, Cochin & Kozhikode) whereas we have connectivity only in Chennai without considering Trichy, Coimbatore or Madurai Airports. This is the discrimation made by all competent authorities due the fact Civil Aviation Sector largely dominated by Kerelities.
March 9, 2009 at 3:14 PM
Lets not deny the fact there are huge kerala population in the mid-east countries when compared to other states from India( I am be wrong).I agree we need more connection to Kuwait from Tamilnadu and specifically from Trichy. But lets no blame kerala for not getting it.We should blame our in-efficiency.
Like Singapore and Malaysia for us, mid-east for kerala. We have many flights to Singapore and KL but kerala doesn’t have much.
March 10, 2009 at 9:44 AM
Mr.Kumar.
In Singapore and Malaysia, not meaningful numbers of Keralies are living whreas in Kuwait/Abudabi/Muscat/Dammam, huge of numbers of Tamilians are living but AIE not launch direct flights proportionally, such a decision should be taken based on the demand. Please check with Srilankan Airlines, how many tamilans coming in from Kuwait to Trichy and Chennai using colombo as a transit.
Capacity of Trichy flights is: 150 A320 Airbus Flight which is full every day.
Similary Colombo to Chennai is full, capasity is 265 A340 Airbus.
Our concern is since the demand is huge, why AIE not launching direct flights to Kuwait from Trichy/Chennai sectors. If introuced the hardship will be reduced and the trafffic load also diminished substantially as we have a big traffic problem in Trichy to Chennai Trunk Road(NH).
March 10, 2009 at 11:42 AM
I would like to request the airlines authorities, please extend the Chennai – Dammam – Chennai Air India up to Trichy. Which will very helpful for the people around Trichi.
Thanks.

AAI has proposed to charge Rs 300-350 from passengers flying from these airports. Among various airports where the airport operator has proposed to levy the development fee are Trivandrum, Trichy, Ahmedabad, Dibrugarh and Udaipur.

GULF MELTDOWN MIRRORS IN DIPPING AIR LINKS TO KERALA:
AIE, has decided to drop one of its weekly flights from Kochi to Dubai from this week(Week # 11), and more such measures are in the pipeline. An Air India official confirmed that three more flights from Kochi to Sharjah would be scrapped from next week.
AIE has been a favourite with Gulf bound passengers from KERELA for the attractive fares, connectivity and frequency of operations.
Kozhikode has the most number of AIE flights out of Kerala, with 46 weekly flights, followed by Kochi which has 37 per week and Trivandrum with 24 flights per week. While Kochi’s weekly flights will drop to 33, there will be no scrapping of AIE flights from Kozhikode or Trivandrum, an AIE official said.
Amidst the gloom, there is also the possible development of AIE having recently launched a flight from here to Salalah which followed another new flight to Kuwait a month earlier.
Airline industry official say that loads have been particularly affected in the DUBAI sector, which had led to decline in load factors in flights to Dubai & Sharjah while passengers traffic to cities in Saudi Arabia continued to be healthy.
One concern for the airline industry here is about the likely off-take in passenger traffic from kerala to Gulf during the summer months when schools close here with families normally go on vacation to join the bread-winner in Gulf. Some of the Expats in Gulf travel to Kerala during this time to holiday with their families. This year such travel may be curtailed.
An Kochi based airline executive said March-April, are generally lean times for the Kerala-Gulf sector but a concern this year had been a dip in the traffic into the state from the Gulf countries.

Air Arabia starting services to Goa from April 16. For the past couple of years Air Arabia have started services to several cities in India but Trichy. I dont understand why no service to Trichy??

also we have to push togoverment to arrange another company flight services to singapore.because air india express never reduce the fare.even less fuel price.also cont get ticket easily,

If Emirates,Etihad airways or Kuwait airways is connected, then all the dreams of flying to Middle east, Europe and North America from Trichy become reality. Hope it will happen soon.
March 17, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Today, Etihad & Kuwait Airways reduced their fares drastically in Kuwait to Chennai Sector to KD 70 & KD 68 respectively, whereas Srilankan Airlines charges upto KWD 156/- in these sector.
Kuwait Airways is non stop direct flights valid until 31/05/2009. Etihad fare valid until 31/08/2009. one hour transit in Abudhabi. Passengers intend to go to Chennai from Kuwait during this summer can use Etihad Airlines. Online booking is available http://www.etihad.com, and safe money.
March 17, 2009 at 5:11 PM
I don’t think that the above is correct. UL fare for KWI-MAA sector is only Kd. 65.000 for round trip.
March 18, 2009 at 5:13 AM
Srilankan was giving this 65KWD offer long time back, as of now, the fare is 106 KWD for chennai and trichy round trip if you are travelling in april.
March 18, 2009 at 9:35 AM
Etihad fare of KWD: 70/= valid until 31/08/09 for Kuwait to Chennai sector whereas Srilankan fare KWD 65/= valid until 30/04/2009 after which substantial increase in price totalling to KWD: 156/= on these routes KWI-MAA/TRZ.This increase fare valid until 31/08/09. But this, no one will purcahse as Kuwait Airways, Emirates & Etihad have reduced their fares considerably. If anyone wated to save money, avoid travelling in Srilankan Airways and better to utilze Emirates,Etihad or KAC.

I think not only the above, even Gullf Air , Qatar Airways also cheaper for Chennai. Yes for TRZ there is no option. Ethihad has only twice weekly. others are haveing daily.
March 20, 2009 at 2:26 AM
flying to gulf in a gulf airline will be the most cheapest way because there fuel is cheaper than water.
March 24, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Looks like no new services from Trichy during this summer schedule. Also I understand Kingfisher has postponed its plan to fly to Dubai and other international destinations.

Around 46500passangers used TRZ airport in the month of Jan’09.39000intl+7500 domestic. Hope the traffic exceeds 50000 in the month of March’09 due to the additional services introduced by AIE to dubai and singapore
March 25, 2009 at 8:27 AM
Yeah…………….very soon AIE to introduce evening flight from Singapore – Trichy sector daily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Also kingfisher to introduce international flight from Trichy as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 25, 2009 at 8:58 AM
I don’t know about AIE, but as I mentioned Kingfisher has postponed its international plans for now and don’t know how it will start services from Trichy.
Anyway, what destination Kingfisher is planing to start from Trichy?
The airlines should start services to new destinations from Trichy rather than increasing the services to the existing destinations. Many airlines that started services from Calicut are planing to withdraw their services due to over capacity.
March 25, 2009 at 1:02 PM
Earlier Air Sahara has announced Trichy-Colombo route. KF may follow this sector from Trichy by adding late evening flights to colombo
March 25, 2009 at 1:10 PM
Yeah……………….AIE plans introducing evening Singapore-Trichy-Colombo-Trichy sector by next month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 26, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Why would KF/AIE want to start services to Colombo when Srilankan/Mihin already flies there? This will create over capacity. Instead KF/AIE can fly to destinations like Kuwait, Abudhabi, Muscat as most people demand flights to these destinations.

Mr. Kumar and Mr. Narayanan,
There is small hope that TRZ may be connected in future. see the below:
Emirates, too, is increasing connectivity to India via its hub Dubai.
Global airlines are not being picky about which they service, but are focusing on smaller ones
“The India-UK/US market is clearly important for Middle Eastern carriers and it does not help India hub aspirations. However, Indian airports, airlines, etc., will in the end be sunk or saved depending on quality of decisions and making the right investments,” Craig Jenks, president of Airline/Aircraft Projects Inc., a New York-based air transport advisory, said by email.
These global carriers are not being picky about where they go. Besides Kerala—which is a lode of labour for West Asian countries—and metropolitan cities, they are adding cities such as Nagpur and Tiruchirapalli to their network. Qatar Airways also plans to start flights to Amritsar and Goa later in the year.

The Malaysian low-cost airline, Air Asia, not only plans to launch a second daily service between Kuala Lumpur and Tiruchi from October this year but also plans to expand its footprint around the country, a senior airline official has said.
Expansion plans
“We are looking at expanding to India in 2009-10.While we will fly 14 times-a-week from October this year between Tiruchi and Kuala Lumpur, the airline is in the last stages of determining which other sectors it should operate to in India,” the airline’s Network Management officer, Ms Subashini Silvadas, told Business Line on the sidelines of the recently concluded Routes conference.
The airline will not like to be in primary market such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bangalore, Hyderabad among others she said.
“For some cities like Chennai for which there is potential, the airline will look to operate a daily service from the beginning. For other cities, we will have to take a call on how many times a week the airline should fly,” she added. In addition, Air Asia X, a subsidiary of Air Asia , will look at operations in to Mumbai and Delhi “We hope to have the flights in place end of this year and next year,” Ms Silvadas added.
While Air Asia offers seating only in economy class, Air Asia, will operate the larger Airbus A-330 aircraft and will give the passenger the option of travelling in either business or economy class.
April 2, 2009 at 3:10 PM
It is good to hear Air Asia adding second flight. So,what is stopping other airlines including Air Arabia,Silk air to start services from Trichy??

Hope that from October 2009 onwards TRZ airport will handle 70000plus people per month after the introduction of 2nd daily flight between TRZ and Kulalumpur by Air Asia. By May onwards TRZ will handle 60000plus passangers.
By this year end we definitely surpass Coimbatore and Managalore airport interms of total no. of passangers
Hope that AIE will soon introduce direct flights to Kuwait and Doha by this year end.
April 15, 2009 at 5:18 AM
If any one of the Gulf countries airlines are connected to Trichy, it will be a great help for us.

Around 41000passangers used the TRZ airport in the month of Feb’09. Despite auto recession TRZ airport continues its growth. Many airports including chennai,Coimbatore, Madurai, varanasi, pune etc showing negative growth. Its time for the airport authorities to open the new terminal immediately and pass on the benefits to the passangers so as to increase no of passangers in future
April 21, 2009 at 7:12 PM
Great to see that Trichy witnessed second best growth rate after Pune…
April 21, 2009 at 7:52 PM
It is really frustrating that airlines plan to start services to existing destinations when Trichy needs connectivity to more new cities.
Kingfisher should plan to start services to Mid-east countries rather than Colombo.Even if they plan Colombo, then it should be BLR-TRZ-CMB so we get connectivity to bangalore.
April 23, 2009 at 9:01 AM
AIE website shows that its introducing 3 more new flights weekly to Dubai and Singapore, but the details was not yet released or booking not yet opened. Enquired to AIE, there is no response yet…

Coimbatore: The ongoing development works at the Coimbatore Airport for handling the increase in passenger and air traffic are nearing completion, said M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director.
Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Vasudeva said that the airport runway earlier was 7,500 ft and the same had been extended to 9,520 ft. With works on for fixing threshold and approach lights, very shortly the runway would become operational.
Airport Authority of India is planning to give NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) on the extended runway and could be used after 56 days. This would enable landing of wide-bodied and fat-bellied aircraft without major restrictions on load or fuel.
The glide path in the Instrument Landing System (ILS) would be shifted to guide the landing aircraft. The final objective was to extend the runway to 11,000 ft.
Works are already under way for expanding the terminal building with a capacity for 300 passengers in order to accommodate 700 passengers at a cost of Rs. 78 crore by increasing the area from 6,000 sq.m. to 14,700 sq.m.
The terminal building expansion would include modern arrival hall besides improvements to the structure. The new building would have additional lounges such as VIP and Executive. It would also have two aerobridges with visual docking guidance system, four escalators and elevators and modern passenger baggage handling systems. The approach road from Sitra Junction to the airport would be widened and the AAI was waiting for the local body to hand over the road
April 24, 2009 at 9:41 AM
Dear Manikandan,
AIE already enhanced its flight schedules to Singapore and Dubai. Information available in the schedule search as well as bookings.
14flights a week to Singapore (14*2=28services)
7Flights a week to Dubai (7*2=14services)

Chennai: Air India Express, the budget airline of Air India, on Thursday announced the launch of its new biweekly service on Chennai-Abu Dhabi-Chennai sector from April 30.
Abu Dhabi is the fifth destination being connected to Chennai by the airline, a Air India release here said.
“With the introduction of this new service from Chennai via Tiruchirappalli to Abu Dhabi, Air India Express would increase the present 21 flights per week to 23 with effect from April 30,” it said.
Air India Express would operate the new service on Thursdays and Saturdays with a capacity of 185 economy class seats.
The flight would leave Chennai at 12.50 pm and reach Abu Dhabi (via Tiruchirapalli) at 5 pm.In return direction, the flight would leave Abu Dhabi at 6.20 pm and arrive in Chennai (via Tiruchirapalli) at 1.40 am
April 26, 2009 at 4:32 AM
Dear Tiruchians,
It is well known that the state and central representatives from Trichy district were not interested in the development of Trichy city. They always struggle to safegaurd their MP/MLA seats.
> No industrial investments so far since 1965.
> Trains originating from Trichy has been extended to some other destinations.
> Upgradation of Trichy GH on par with AIIMS has also been shifted to MAdurai & Salem due to political pressure.
> Direct trains from Trichy was also cancelled.
> Electrification of Villupuram-Trichy is done by keeping Trichy as a base for Madurai City’s improvement. (Remeber that Chennai-Trichy electrification was started around 1980’s as MGR’s dream project to develop Trichy as the second capital of the state. But it has been completed now after 25 years).
> No integrated bus stand.
> Ring road project still in black & white.
> Low infrastructure facilities when compared to Madurai, Coimbatore.
> Corporation’s projects (Repaetedly announced every year during budget) like Theme park, widening of junction, thiruvanaikovil bridges, are still in Papers.
We can add number of points to this list. Ultimately Trichy have lost its sheen.
Friends its time for our showtime. I request yout o boycot this LokSabha Election. Plz don’t vote for anyone this election. Pass it to ur friends and relatives.

TRZ airport handles around 48000passangers in the month of March’09. 40647Intl+6600domestic.
Overall TRZ airport handles 500000passangers compared 3.94lac passangers during the previous year. Growth rate is around 18% as expected.
At the same time Madurai airport shows a negative growth of 3.64lac passangers to 3.52lac passangers. Not only Madurai, all the international airports in the country showing a negative growth.
I hope TRZ will handle 50000plus passangers from April onwards.
May 13, 2009 at 12:59 PM
Why are you always targetting Madurai Airport. Dont compare Trichy Airport with Madurai, since there are no International flights from Madurai. If at all you want to compare Trichy airport with Madurai aiport then do it when Madurai gets International connectivity, after which Trichy airport will also show negative growth in passenger handling.
May 20, 2009 at 7:39 AM
Hai,
Last 1 ½ years not operate any new service to Kuwait, Qatar, etc. AIA has plan. But politically the Tamil Nadu government is giving more important to Madurai as compare with Trichy (Father – Sun relationship). Also they are planning to built their airport as 2nd important airport after Chennai airport. If operate any new service from Trichy, it may affect their plan. So they are slowing Trichy airport growth. It is happening from last 1 ½ years. Now the situation will become very bad. Also no alliance party MP from Trichy. Wait and see what is going to happen.
May 20, 2009 at 2:42 PM
I too think the Airport development is being delayed intentionally. It is almost 3 years now still the new terminal hasn’t become operational. As usual AAI gives some reasons for the delay.
We were hoping for fast development of Trichy airport, but looks like things wont happen much in the coming years.
May 21, 2009 at 3:07 AM
the current alliance wont remain for long time which may end up in next state election as no cong heads didnt get neither state ministry or central ministry so lets see.

Trichy airport or Madurai Airport to be another S.Korea, Yanyang (Ghost Airport)??????????????????????????????????????
Yangyang International is an airport looking for a reason to exist. Built on South Korea’s east coast just seven years ago, you won’t find any delays or long queues here. In fact, you won’t find any passengers at all.
The initial vision could not have been more different.
Up to three million people a year were meant to throng the gleaming floors of the departure and arrival halls, built at a cost of almost $400m (£260m).
But last year an average of just 26 passengers a day came through the doors, vastly outnumbered by the 146 airport staff on hand to serve them.
In November the last commercial flight took off, and the terminal became what the Korean national press has dubbed a “ghost airport”, an impressive monument to overestimated demand.
But it is not an isolated example.
Empty spaces
In fact, if there was to be an award for the world’s quietest international airports, South Korea would surely be one of the favourites.
Politicians, in order to gain votes, promise their constituents an airport
Choi In-wook
Korean Citizens Action Network
At the other end of the country from Yangyang, way down in the south-west, is the even newer Muan International Airport.
It opened less than two years ago, and although a handful of flights do at least land there, the terminal is struggling.
Built amidst the surrounding onion fields, it looks an unlikely spot for a thriving airport, and the scene inside is, once again, one of empty check-in desks and empty spaces.
Figures for last year show passenger levels at less than 3% of capacity.
“It might be better if it was used a bit more,” said one passenger I spoke to, part of a group of Korean tourists preparing to catch one of only two flights leaving that day.
“But having said that,” she added, “it is nice to come to an airport that isn’t busy for a change.”
Vanishing demand
As elsewhere, the project was meant to be a boost for the local economy, bringing in visitors, and connecting the local economy with the wider world.
But the region’s farmers and fishermen may now wonder if it was a worthwhile investment.
South Korea has a total of 14 regional airports. Figures show that 11 of them lost money last year.
What should have been the 15th, another new east-coast airport, already more than 80% complete, has been suspended because of lack of demand.
And there is currently an ongoing debate about the wisdom of the plans to build yet one more, somewhere near the southern port city of Busan.
One reason for the lack of demand for air travel may be the simultaneous development of a high-speed rail link that now whisks travellers from one end of the country to the other in less than three hours, as well as the construction of a network of new motorways.
‘Political logic’
Local airports have been built by “political rather than market logic”, according to one newspaper.
The Korean Citizens’ Action Network, an organisation that monitors government spending, claims that hundreds of millions of dollars have been wasted on terminals and runways that simply are not needed.
Yanyang airport was built at a cost of almost $400m
“Politicians, in order to gain votes, promise their constituents an airport,” said spokesman Choi In-wook.
“Rather than checking the need thoroughly, the feasibility studies can be distorted to support the projects, and as a result there is an oversupply of airports in this country.”
Could not the case be made, though, that some of today’s under-used airports may turn out to have a long-term future?
“Maybe,” he said. “If they honestly forecast that there would be large, initial losses for a long-term strategic benefit, then fair enough. But from the beginning the feasibility reports are inaccurate, so no one knows the true prospects.”
Both the government and the Korea Airports Corporation, the body that manages the regional airports, refused the BBC’s request for an interview.
There are those, like the staff at Yangyang airport, who do indeed believe that they may still find a profitable future for their terminal.
But it is the views of the passengers that really matter – and for now, they are voting with their feet.
May 26, 2009 at 10:04 AM
Ofcourse Trichy will change according to international standards very soon. How about govt.officials in Airport & other places, always looking for Bribe. Very sad & shame on them. Will it change ? Change has to come from individuals not from the society. Am i right ? At the same time law has to be tight & it should not allow this kind of activities openly on society.

Everything will get O K, wait and watch
God bless you. Thanks

It’s a real pity of u in being a faithful naive Trichy guy………………Please come to realty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And MAY GOD BLESS U & TRICHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 1, 2009 at 2:08 PM
It is very good news to hear new terminal building is becoming operational.I only hope good for Trichy airport.
Paramount is short of aircraft and has decent patronage to Trichy.I assume there was news that Paramount’s service to become normal from June.
The district administration hasn’t taken any action for acquiring land for expansion though AAI has its plan ready for expansion.

The 400-metre extended runway at Coimbatore Airport will be put into use when the first aircraft will land there at 5.30 a.m. on Thursday.
The total length of the runway (2,590 metres) has been extended to 2,990 metres, i.e., by 1,000 feet from 8,500 feet to 9,500 feet approximately.
Source:http://www.hindu.com/2009/06/04/stories/2009060456030500.htm
Airport Director M.R. Vasudeva told The Hindu that the threshold of lighting and Instrument Landing System (ILS) would continue only for the 2,590 metres until the obstacles were removed for installation of the threshold lighting.
The extended runway would be on the other side i.e., runway 05 side.
The extended runway would help in easy landing of wide-bodied and fat-bellied aircraft such as 767 ER and Boeing 737-900, Mr. Vasudeva said.
There will be no load restrictions in terms of passengers, cargo and fuel for airplanes from Thursday. From now on every aircraft can have 15 to 20 additional passengers on board and similarly additional two tonnes of cargo.
Besides, there will not be any restrictions on the fuel storage levels in the aircraft.
The airport runway can now accommodate landing and takeoff of aircraft with up to 204 tonnes approximately. Earlier the load capacity of the aircraft was 160 tonnes.
Expansion plans
The extended runway comes in the existing land available with the airport as part of the expansion plans already under progress.
The future runway expansion for up to 10,500 to 11,000 feet depends on land acquisition process.
The work on extension of the apron will be completed by October.
The existing apron has five parking bays and one isolation bay for aircraft with security perception. On completion of the additional apron work, the airport will have eight parking bays and one isolation bay and this will enable the airport to handle more aircraft during peak traffic hours.
Similarly, the parallel taxiway work was facing problems owing to the need for shifting of power lines and once the work is completed by October or November, the time taken by aircraft i.e., the runway utilisation time, will come down, facilitating quick landing and takeoff.

Bad news for Tiruchi.
As per the news report appeared in Dinamalar to-day, Tiruchi Airport will be depromoted by depromoting the airport manager post. Instead, Madurai Airport doubly promoted. This will affect the future growth of Tiruchi Airport in getting more facilities, facelifting, more funds allocation and every possible development. Though Tiruchi Airport stands first in the country in terms of passenger growth and more number of international connectivity in Tamil Nadu next to Chennai, the fate is decided not by god but by the politicians. Good or bad, majority wins. Ok. Tiruchians let us pray for God without hope.

There is a cycle for everything and for everybody. Despite all the bottlenecks, Tiruchi will shine.

Onething I want to clarify that TRZ airport never ride on anybody’s support. It has developed on its own potential from the beginning whereas Madurai airport project is very much supported by its own politicians, Federations etc. Still they have not won their objective despite the new terminal building. No Intl airlines is queued up to start operations from Madurai airport except Pasramount airways. Due to Mr.Alagiri’s presece Madurai may get international connectivity but it will not affetct Trich’s growth. Somebody shouted that after the introduction of Airarabia,Silkair, Srilankan airlines from Coimbatore airport will affect the Trichy’s growth. What happen Srilankan stopped its operations and other airlines reduced their frequenices
June 6, 2009 at 7:04 AM
I request that True Trichians will not comment negative

@R.S.Narayanan
Can you provide any concreate source which says No Intl. airlines is queued up to start operations from Madurai airport except Paramount airways. And FYI Operations to Coimbatore airport alone was not stopped by Srilankan Airlines but also to Major airports like Kochi,Hyderabad,Calicut&Goa were suspended. Does it mean Srilankan airlines suspended its flight to the above destinations due to Trichy was growing. Moreover, specify which other airline reduced their frequencies to Coimbatore Airport.
June 7, 2009 at 6:05 AM
Srilankan also suspended 4services to Trichy from the 11 to 7.You see the example of Mihin Lanka. It suspends its operations to Trivandrum but not to Trichy because there is a potential of the TRZ airport.

Hi,
On June10th I took a AIE flight from Chennai to Trichy with a full load of 160passangers. Interestingly there were 100domestic passangers. The aircraft parked infront of the new terminal. New terminal is very beautiful and spacious. Aerobridge work is not yet completed. I think that ground floor is used for domestic and the first floor for international
June 13, 2009 at 5:49 PM
AAI southern zone director while inaugurating the airport operations from new terminal has said Aerobridge work will be completed in 2 months.
June 14, 2009 at 4:55 AM
